Araguaia is a river system in Brazil by which name this plant became known. However, much evidence suggests that the plant is actually a Hygrophila lancea from Japan and Hong Kong. Its growth is compact with densely seated leaves.
The plant branches readily and grows 10-20 cm tall. Pruning stems preserves the bushy shape. The reddish brown to reddish purple color is enhanced by good growing conditions. For a hygrophila, the growth rate of 'Araguaia' is moderate.
