The Growling Gurami (Trichopsis vittata) is a relatively small and peaceful member of the labyrinth fish family. The species originates from the southern part of Southeast Asia, where it can be found in the wild from Vietnam to Borneo. There they live in densely vegetated, small, shallow waters, such as ponds, or flooded rice fields. Temperatures at these latitudes remain fairly constant between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. Water hardness is low and PH levels below 6 are also not uncommon for the natural habitat of growling gouramis.
Growling Guramis resemble their close relative, the growling dwarf gourami, but grow significantly larger at up to 6.5 cm. They are further distinguished by striking stripes that extend over the entire body of the fish. Thereby their enchanting iridescent fins can show a variety of colors. Trichopsis vittata also belongs to those labyrinth fishes with filaments on the pectoral fin. Males have elongated pelvic fins and a highly extended dorsal fin. Females are a little more plump.
The animals need tanks starting from 70cm and can be maintained despite their affiliation to the family of the labyrinth fish very well in small groups starting from 5 animals. The tank should be oriented quite close to the natural environment of the animals. This includes many plants, roots and other hiding places. The animals prefer to live in the middle and upper water area and are therefore also well suited for keeping with armored catfish and other bottom dwellers. They are also peaceful in their behavior towards other aquarium inhabitants and thus can be kept well with other peaceful fish such as dwarf corys or small tetras.
The tank temperature is best set at 26 to 27 degrees and a PH value of 6-7 is preferred, although the animals still tolerate PH values slightly above 7 well. The water must be relatively soft and should not exceed a total hardness of 15. The KH value is best below 6, and due to their ability to breathe air through their labyrinth organ they are best suited for tanks with a high CO2 supply.
The growling gourami is a relatively shy animal and is best observed with some distance from the tank. If the animals feel safe and comfortable, they are extremely lively and enchant with pronounced social behavior. This calmness and security are also necessary for the growling gourami to present its best colors.
For feeding we recommend a mixture of frozen and live food, but also dry food types like granules or flakes are accepted by the fish. Care should be taken not to overfeed the animals, as they tend to overfat and can suffer health problems if fed too enthusiastically.
By the way, the growling gourami deserves its name because you can hear the animals clearly and well. The sound is reminiscent of the chirping of a cricket or soft clicking of a bird. Most of the time, however, the animals are quiet and the noise is not so loud that you would find it disturbing.
Breeding is relatively unproblematic. The animals are conditioned with high quality live food for a while until you put the desired breeding pair into a small tank of about 10-15 liters and a water height below 15 centimeters. The temperature in the breeding tank should be 3-4 degrees higher than in normal keeping. It is recommended to lower the animals to 24 degrees for a few weeks before. After successful mating, the female is removed first and, as soon as the young are free-swimming, the male as well.
In the socialization Snarling Guramis present themselves unproblematic, since they are peaceful opposite other aquarium inhabitants. Dwarf shrimp under one centimeter in size are eaten, so keeping them with these is not recommended.
