Pterophyllum scalare we know as sailfin or angelfish in aquaristics. The breeding form Schoko Grünspiegel angelfish is wonderfully chocolate brown and metallic green colored. The chocolate brown fins of this sailfin and the green metallic mirror on the body show to be particularly attractive when combined. Like all Pterophyllum scalare, the Chocolate Green Mirror Angelfish grows to 15 cm in length and can reach a fin span of 26 cm . In the aquarium, angelfish can live 8 to 10 years.
Here you can buy German offspring of this fantastic breeding form of Pterophyllum scalare.
These cool aquarium fish belong to the cichlids or cichlids from South America, whereas the chocolate greenfin is a breeding form from the aquarium. Angelfish live in the wild in the blackwater of the Amazon, Rio Negro and Oyapock. The cichlids are often found in the quiet shore areas of rivers, where they are perfectly camouflaged in the branches of trees lying in the water and in the driftwood.
A group of 5 angelfish should be kept in an aquarium of 300 liters or more. Because they have a large wingspan with their long fins, Pterophyllum scalare need an aquarium with at least 60 cm height. When setting up the aquarium, you should think about both free swimming space and hiding places for the angelfish. Finely branched roots, twigs and also stones are welcome to the angelfish. You can operate the aquarium for angelfish as a blackwater aquarium, which is not planted, or green it with aquarium plants. On large-leaved Echinodorus species angelfish like to lay their spawn. In the narrow long leaves of the Vallisnerien the sail fins like to stand.
The sexes are almost indistinguishable in angelfish. Although adult males usually have a hump on their forehead, females can also show this characteristic. In order to find a pair at all, you should keep your young angelfish in a group of five or more - young angelfish are very sociable anyway. You can mix different color varieties - but if you want to breed specifically, we strongly recommend that you stick to one variety of Pterophyllum scalare.
When a pair has been found, the courtship begins. First the two angelfish clean their spawning substrate, then the female starts to spawn in rows. The male then fertilizes the clutch. In a community tank the rearing of the young is unfortunately often difficult. Therefore you can transfer the pair including the clutch into a rearing aquarium for targeted breeding - both parents take care of the brood care in angelfish. When the fry have hatched, you put the female and the male back into the aquarium. You can raise the small chocolate green mirror angelfish with Artemia nauplii.
You cansocialize these South American cichlids with armored catfish, loricariids and larger tetras - angelfish fit perfectly into a classic South American aqu arium. As cichlids, angelfish are somewhat predatory and can attack very small by-fish or even shrimp. Fish or crayfish that nibble on fins are not suitable for keeping with angelfish in the aquarium.
The Schoko Grünspiegel Angelfish loves live and frozen food and also likes our special food for carnivorous cichlids NatureHolic Cichfeed. You can also feed Pterophyllum scalare with NatureHolic flake food or granulated food for omnivorous aquarium fish.
