from over 3,000 reviews "The water ears of the genus Aponogeton come from the subtropics and tropics of Africa and Asia and are unusual but extremely pretty plants for rather large aquariums. They all have in common that their green, long leaves grow from a tuber. Important: Aponogeton like to go dormant, so when they retract their leaves, it doesn't mean the plant is dying!
Most Aponogeton species in aquaristics originally come from waters that dry out seasonally. As a survival strategy, the plant forms a storage tuber and retracts its leaves during the dry season. When the water body carries water again, the Aponogeton leaves sprout anew. However, Aponogeton species in permanent waters also like to go dormant.
In aquariums, too, these aquatic plants need a resting period of about four to eight weeks, in keeping with their nature. You can tell that this is the case when your aquarium water weed stops growing or even starts to retract or die off its leaves.
During the dormant phase, it is best to remove the Aponogeton tuber from the aquarium and place it in a flower pot with moist sand in a dark, cool place for at least four to eight weeks. After that you can put the tuber back into the aquarium and you will soon notice that your Aponogeton will sprout new leaves again.
Here you can get an Aponogeton tuber without leaves produced by Dennerle. Just plant it and wait, the water pondweed will do the rest by itself! Please make sure that the tuber is not completely covered with substrate, so that it does not rot! The tuber should be about halfway in the substrate.
Propagation is quite difficult with most Aponogeton species for the aquarium and is done by seeds from the flower.
You can choose from four different Aponogeton species from Dennerle here in our store:
Aponogeton boivianus - large nubby water eagle, Boivin's water eagle
This Aponogeton species comes from Madagascar. It grows to about 65 cm high in the aquarium. The strongly knobbed long leaves are slightly transparent bottle-green. Super in the background or as a solitary plant.
Aponogeton longiplumulosus - Wavy-leaved Water Ear
This attractive Aponogeton with the wavy leaf structure from the northwest of Madagascar can grow up to 60 cm high in the aquarium. It is super as a specimen plant in large, tall aquariums or, of course, as a textural accent in the aquarium background. The Wavy-leaved Water Ear keeps its dormancy in place in the aquarium, so you don't have to take the bulb out of the aquarium.
Aponogeton madagascariensis - Madagascar lattice plant
The lattice plant is an endemic water ear from the island of Madagascar. It grows up to about 50 cm high in the aquarium. The lattice structure is unique to this aquarium plant, which explains its popularity as an attractive specimen plant in the aquarium. However, you can also use the delicate structure to create interesting accents in the background of your aquarium.
Aponogeton ulvaceus - Sea Lettuce-like Water Ear
This water ear from tropical Asia grows to about 50 cm tall and has strikingly strongly curled leaf edges. Its leaves are slightly transparent light green, with brownish tones under a lot of light. Great as a specimen plant or as an eye catcher in the background of your aquarium. Older bulbs sprout around 40 to 50 leaves over time and grow especially dense. This water ear propagates via breeding tubers on long stems.
