from over 3,000 reviews "The apricot crayfish, scientifically called Cherax holthuisi , originates from the Vogelkop Peninsula in Papua/Indonesia. Especially striking are its very small eyes, which is due to the fact that this crayfish is actually a cave dweller. Usually the apricot crayfish is beautifully colored orange or apricot, but there are also brown or beige specimens. Mostly both males and females grow between 8 and 10 cm, but a size of up to 15 cm can also be reached - always measured without claws. Males and females can be distinguished by their sexual openings - in males they are located at the base of the 5th pair of walking legs, in females at the base of the third. The apricot crayfish has a life expectancy of several years.
The mating act of the apricot crayfish is a real highlight. The male performs a kind of wedding dance and moves back and forth in the tank. It can often be observed that male and female knock their claws together and touch each other almost tenderly with their antennae. About 24 hours after the actual mating usually the egg-laying takes place. Stone structures and calcareous rocks have often proven to be suitable as spawning caves. it takes 6-8 weeks until the young animals hatch, this is how long the eggs are carried under the rolled up abdomen of the females. Usually the young crayfish then remain in the care of the mother for a few days before they begin an independent life in the aquarium. Numerous hiding places are advantageous so that the young crayfish can grow up well.
The apricot crayfish is a very peaceful crayfish species. Among conspecifics it comes only very rarely once to friction. Also the socialization with shrimps and peaceful fishes is mostly unproblematic. Snails or mussels can be cracked and eaten. At temperatures between 20 and 25°C the animals feel well, lower temperatures are not well tolerated. There should be enough hiding places and caves in the tank, because in nature the crayfish also mostly live in caves. In addition, hiding places are very important during molting and also in the reproductive phase. Due to the size of the animals, the tank should hold at least 80 to 100 liters for a pair. Crayfish are very good climbers and like to make a trip to the country sometimes, so an aquarium for crayfish must be absolutely tightly covered.
Apricot crayfish do not eat healthy plants, so they are suitable for nicely planted tanks. On their menu, apricot crayfish are very fond of special crayfish food, brown autumn leaves, but also frozen food, vegetables and green food such as spinach and nettle. The mixed diet should consist mainly of vegetable components.
Our food recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crayfish Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
