CO2 fertilization for aquarium

Plants belong in an aquarium. They serve not only the natural look and for swimming through and hiding the fish, but also the perfect water conditions and values. Because plants produce oxygen and release it. Just as we humans need oxygen, so do the animals in the aquarium need oxygen to live and survive. Without plants, such a self-contained system cannot survive for long, or else, there must be a biologically intact filter to maintain the habitat. Nevertheless, sufficient planting and good growth bring benefits, both for the balance in the tank, and for the appearance.

CO2 deficiency in the aquarium and its consequences

Unfortunately, it is often the case that aquarists use enough plants, but they do not grow or hardly grow and thrive. The reason for this can be a CO2 deficiency. Plants need CO2 to produce oxygen and to grow. Although CO2 enters the water during water changes, through new fish or also through the environment, the quantities are often too small to promote plant growth and influence it positively.

The solution here can be CO2 fertilization. Using special CO2 systems, exactly the right amount of CO2 enters the tank so that all plants can grow and thrive.

How CO2 fertilization works in the aquarium

Such a CO2 system usually consists of a container or bottle, a so-called bubble counter, several pieces of hose and a flipper. In the bottle itself the CO2 is produced, e.g. by biological processes, via the hose it reaches the bubble counter, via another hose into the flipper, and from here the CO2 bubbles are released into the aquarium water. The bottle and the bubble counter are located outside the tank, the flipper inside the tank. The flipper should be placed so that the bubbles are evenly distributed in the aquarium with the flow of the filter.

The right CO2 fertilization for the aquarium/aquascape !

For CO2 fertilization there are different sized systems or bottles. Depending on the size of the aquarium, the appropriate size should be selected so that the aquarium is supplied with sufficient CO2. Aquarists do not need to be afraid that too much CO2 gets into the tank. This is because the CO2 is released very evenly into the water via such special devices. Over a longer period of time, usually for 30 days or longer, the aquarium is perfectly supplied with CO2 without having to do anything else for this.

Conclusion of Co2 fertilization

If a CO2 system has been installed, observers can usually very quickly notice better growth of the plants and thus better conditions and values in the aquarium. The animals become fitter and more active, because now the water is also enriched with more oxygen. The CO2 fertilization is a good step towards more plant growth and a healthy environment for all creatures in the aquarium.
