The filtration of an aquarium fulfills two tasks - firstly, there is the biological filter function, in which bacteria break down pollutants in the aquarium water such as ammonium (NH4) or nitrite (NO2) and convert them to the comparatively more harmless nitrate (NO3) - an important nutrient for the plants. The nitrate that the plants do not consume is discharged through regular water changes in the aquarium. Biologically effective filter material actually has only one task: it must provide the bacteria that do this extremely important work in the aquarium with a space to settle in, where these so-called nitrifiers find optimal living conditions. For this reason, the filter material chosen for biological filtration should be as porous as possible. 650 grams of JBL MicroMec filter material made of sintered glass, for example, has a surface area of 1,500 square meters thanks to the many pores and channels - this corresponds to a construction site of almost 40x40 meters!

In the deeper channels of the sintered glass, an oxygen-poor environment is quickly created. Here, other bacteria (denitrifiers) breathe the oxygen out of the nitrate. This process is called denitrification. What remains is atmospheric, i.e. gaseous nitrogen, which escapes through the filter outlet in the form of gas bubbles. Sintered glass is therefore also suitable for reducing high nitrate levels in the aquarium.

Biologically active filter material needs to be flushed and mechanically agitated from time to time to keep the channels from clogging and to keep the pollutant-degrading bacteria working.

And then there is the mechanical (pre-) filtration of the aquarium water to mention: Here, suspended matter and turbidity are filtered out so that the aquarium water becomes crystal clear. The task of predominantly mechanically acting filter materials is to prevent the biological filter material from clogging too quickly and from becoming contaminated too soon. Both types of filter material for the main filter therefore complement each other perfectly.
