Algae plagues are dreaded in the aquarium. As a rule, the cause of excessive algae growth lies in a nutrient imbalance. The plants, which actually compete with the algae and limit the algae growth by their growth, are limited in their growth by a nutrient deficiency. The "remaining" nutrients, which they can no longer absorb for this reason, are then available to the algae.

As lower plants, algae have a few tricks up their sleeves as to how they can use such nutrient gaps to their advantage. For example, algae can obtain carbon from carbonate, while most higher plants rely on carbon dioxide dissolved in the aquarium water, of which there is often much less than carbonate. Thus, algae can access all nutrients, while their competition - the higher aquarium plants - are inhibited in growth. Especially an excess of macronutrients like phosphate (PO4) or nitrate (NO3) often results in an unsightly algae infestation.
