Spawning boxes do not enjoy a particularly good reputation in aquaristics. The plastic boxes commonly used in the past left a lot to be desired - either the slots inside were too small for a sensible exchange of water, in which case the water quality in the spawning box suffered enormously, which did not always end well for the fish larvae inside ... or the slots were simply far too large, and the small fish escaped to the outside - which also did not end well for them in an aquarium with large fish.

The resourceful aquarium accessory manufacturer JBL thought about this and not only built a spawning grid into its BabyHome proAir spawning box, but also provided the option of attaching an outflow stone. This outflow stone allows air to be blown into the spawning box.

The oxygen reduces the risk of spawning fungus and also the danger that an increased concentration of bacteria brings. The additional water movement is useful for the fry and also for introduced shrimp. This spawning box is attached to the glass of the aquarium using suction cups.

Because the concept is well thought out, we offer this spawning box for sale in our online store.

Also from JBL and also from other manufacturers there are spawning boxes made of mesh as an alternative to plastic spawning boxes. They are simply hung on the edge of the aquarium on the inside.

If you hang them in front of the filter outlet, there is enough flow and water exchange in them so that the water does not go bad. Moreover, the water coming out of the filter is purified, which is also beneficial in the spawning box. For this reason, net boxes are much more suitable for raising fry and shrimp babies.

Also for the specific mating of dwarf shrimps or guppies the net spawning boxes as well as the BabyHome proAir spawning box are wonderfully suitable.

A pregnant female shrimp can be placed in a net spawning box until release, if there are fish in the aquarium that prey on small shrimp babies. After release, the female is placed back into the aquarium. The baby shrimp can remain in the net box until they are a good size and no longer attacked by predators. Pregnant female guppies can also be placed in a net box for release. Young guppies can also be raised in the net box.

With a cushion of moss, you can even get small fish like guppies (Danio margaritatus) or other danios to spawn in the net box. The adult fish are taken out of the net spawning box after a few days. They have then laid their eggs in the moss. The fish larvae hatch after a few days and can then remain in the net spawning box until they have reached a good size and are no longer eaten in the aquarium. A spawning box is a good way to breed small, calm, egg-laying aquarium fish such as danios or carps.
