We affectionately call it Avatar posthorn snail, because it reminds us of the blue inhabitants of the planet Pandora from the movie of the same name: the blue posthorn snail, which is actually a variant of Planorbella duryi , originally from the south of the USA. In aquaristics, the species is very widespread, but the blue color morph is still rather rare. Its unusual color comes about because the dark body shines through the white-transparent shell. The body itself is not blue, but dark brown to dark gray. Usually abbreviated as blue PHS, the avatar posthorn snail can reach a shell size of up to 2.5 cm.
Reproduction is easy - sufficient food and reasonably good water quality (not too soft) are sufficient for these hermaphrodites, which can even self-fertilize. The relatively flat egg clutches are attached to all kinds of surfaces under water. They have a roundish to slightly oval, fairly firm, somewhat domed lid that resembles a watch glass. The eggs inside lie side by side. The young snails hatch after about two or three weeks. Initially, they may have a fritillary or leopard pattern, but this grows over time.
If plenty of food is available, the blue ramshorn snail reproduces extremely well. However, you can control the population size well via food restrictions. We also gladly accept offspring against a voucher.
Blue ramshorn snails eat algae growth, biofilm, dead plant remains, carrion, remains of fish, shrimp and crab food, vegetables, brown autumn leaves .. . They usually do not touch healthy plants . Blue post horn snails serve as health police in the aquarium, and they take care of everything possible that could otherwise negatively affect the water values.
Of course they should not be kept together with snail eaters, but they can be kept with peaceful fish or dwarf shrimps, other peaceful snails and mussels without any problems. The blue posthorn snail is quite insensitive when it comes to water values, although it does not grow as large in soft water and is also much less long-lived than in hard water.
Our food recommendation: With the Natureholic Snail Feed Power Paste you create a feeding lawn that is very well accepted by all aufwuchs feeding snails. Also delicate wild-caught snails such as racing snails or staghorn snails, which are stressed after transport and do not go to conventional food, can be fed up well with it.
Our plant recommendation: Use for the planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
Actively prevent outbreaks: With the invisible Natureholic Snail Barrier you prevent the escape and loss of your snails from the aquarium.
