from over 3,000 reviews "The Batik Snail (Neritina variegata), also called Tattoo Sn ail, is a very variable, extremely pretty racing snail from the Indo-Pacific region. It lacks the horny rim at the lid edge, which is typical for Neritina species. Their color varies from yellow to light brown, reddish brown to black with dark or yellow line markings and/or spots. It can also happen that the batik snail has a completely black shell - this is usually due to very resistant bacterial coatings that settle on the snails in nature and are very difficult to dissolve. Once the snails are in the aquarium, the shell continues to grow in the natural color - which gives a very pretty effect.
The snails, up to 2.5 cm in size, inhabit rocks and stones in the lower reaches of fast and slow flowing rivers in their natural habitats. The snail is separated sexually, which means that there are males and females, but it is not possible to identify the sex from the outside.
Reproduction in fresh water is not possible. The females of the batik snail like to lay their egg cocoons on hard substrates like stones. They hatch into free-swimming larvae, which in nature are driven by the current into the sea, where they pass through various larval stages before the finished young batik snails migrate back into the rivers.
Also popular with aquascapers, Neritina variegata feeds mainly on algae and algal growth, but after a period of acclimation will also accept a variety of fish foods such as flake, granular and tablet foods, as well as foliage and fresh foods (lettuce, vegetables). Initially, the tattoo snail is helped by supplementary feeding with a special snail food helps the tattoo snail to get used to the new food. Plants are not eaten by the tattoo snail. If the snails are successfully accustomed to the aquarium, they can become very old. In freshly established aquariums, the batik snail can even starve to death.
The socialization of Neritina variegata does not cause any problems, because it is a very peaceful snail. Of course it should not be kept together with snail eaters.
The Tattoo snail prefers like most racing snails of the genus Neritina rather alkaline, hard water with a pH of more than 6.5. The carbonate hardness should be clearly above 3 °dKH. It leaves the water from time to time, so the aquarium should be escape-proof!
Our food recommendation: With the Natureholic Snail Feed Power Paste you create a feeding lawn that is very well accepted by all aufwuchs feeding snails. Also delicate wild-caught snails such as racing snails or staghorn snails, which are stressed after transport and do not go to conventional food, can be fed up well with it.
Our plant recommendation: Use for the planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
Actively prevent outbreaks: With the invisible Natureholic Snail Barrier you prevent the escape and loss of your snails from the aquarium.
