Bubble snail - Physa sp.

The bubble snail is a small, but extremely industrious snail species, which keeps the aquarium clean and takes care of food remains and algae deposits. The largest representatives of the genus Physa grow to 1 cm long, but in the aquarium they rarely reach this size. Through their clear golden transparent shell you can see the mottled mantle tissue, which gave the bubble snail its name - it really looks like it has countless small bubbles under its shell, which looks very pretty.

The bubble snail is very easy to care for and extremely eager to reproduce. Additional food is only needed if a bubble snail is bred, for example to feed small puffer fish, predatory snails, crabs or dwarf crabs. Then it is grateful for all kinds of food from the trade, vegetables and also green food such as nettles .

Bubble snails can often be seen hanging upside down on the surface of the water, eating the surface scum, and also literally dancing around the aquarium on almost invisible threads of slime. Bubble snails do not dig.

Bubble snails are very robust and undemanding when it comes to water hardness, temperature and pH. They can adapt well to different conditions. Due to their adaptability, it is important to make sure that they cannot escape into the wild - they survive even Central European winters in suitable waters and therefore pose a potential threat to our biotopes.

As a hermaphrodite, the bubble snail can reproduce quickly. It deposits its elongated, often curved, not very compact spawn balls on aquatic plants, the glass panes or the aquarium decoration. The young snails then hatch after a few days.

The peaceful, quite useful bubble snail can be easily kept in just about any freshwater aquarium. It keeps everything clean, and its high reproduction rate ensures that a small base population can be maintained even in the presence of fellow snail-eating inhabitants.
