Formerly listed as Caridina cantonensis cf. "Blue Tiger", the tiger shr imp has since been described as a separate species, Caridina mariae. The blue tiger shrimp is a high breeding form of the wild tiger shrimp. With a final size of about 3 cm the females grow to an average size, the males remain somewhat smaller and also slimmer. The strong blue body coloration with the bright striking eyes (Orange Eyes or abbreviated OE) make the Blue Tiger Shrimp a very desirable and attractive shrimp.
The Blue Tiger Shrimp can be kept well in groups already in tanks from 10 liters, but we recommend especially for beginners aquariums from 20 l upwards. Soft, slightly acidic water is advantageous for a good development. Blue tiger shrimp prefer a carbonate hardness (KH) of about 3 to 4 degrees. If the tap water does not fit from the values, so you can set ideal water values with osmosiswater and a special Aufhärtesalz (GH/KH+). A dark substrate allows the colors of the animals to shine beautifully and contributes to their well-being. If the animals feel well, they show themselves in a strong blue up to a beautiful deep royal blue. Temperatures above 25 °C are not well tolerated, therefore, depending on the location of the aquarium, it may be necessary to think about cooling in summer.
The breeding of the blue tiger shrimp is not difficult, it happens without much help of the keeper. About every 5 to 6 weeks the animals mate, and the females release about 20-40 fully developed baby shrimp after a few weeks of gestation. A separate breeding is usually not necessary, because the adults of the blue tiger shrimp hardly chase the offspring. To keep a strong colored strain, the animals should be selected regularly.
The blue tiger shrimp accepts almost any food without problems: Various flake and granulated food, tablet food, special shrimp food as well as frozen and live food. Protein food should be given 2x a week. On the menu should be otherwise a lot of vegetable food such as algae, spinach or nettle. Also brown autumn leaves should be given. It can remain as permanent food in the aquarium and has a positive effect on development and moulting.
A socialization with peaceful fish, crayfish and snails usually works out very well, provided that the water values are suitable. With fish company it is recommended to offer many hiding places in the form of mosses or also small clay caves, so that freshly skinned animals and the offspring find enough protection. If the blue tiger shrimp is socialized with other shrimp, care should be taken that the different species do not interbreed to avoid hybrids. Targeted tiger shrimp are mated with bee shr imp, resulting in very interesting hybrids with beautiful colors and completely new patterns.
