Product information
Blue Florida Crayfish - Procambarus alleni
The blue crayfish Procambarus alleni is an old acquaintance in aquaristics, which is considered robust and adaptable, making it the ideal choice for beginners in crayfish keeping. The animals are of an attractive blue that can vary in intensity. Florida crayfish are very easy to breed and reproduce very well. Since the animals are also very solitary in nature, nothing speaks against a solitary husbandry. - Garnelio
Description

The reddish brown natural form of Procambarus alleni comes from Florida, the blue color form was bred in the aquarium. The blue allenis have been in the hobby for a very long time, they are hardy, adaptable and reproduce readily. They grow to a size of 7 to 10 cm when measured without claws. Male and female florida crayfish grow to about the same size, the claws of the males are narrower and longer, those of the females are slightly more rounded.

For a pair of the blue florida crayfish a well structured 54 l aquarium is sufficient. The animals need climbing and digging possibilities. The aquarium must be absolutely tightly closed, because Florida crayfish, like all other crayfish, are real escape artists, which can even crawl up cables or silicone seams. Swimming space is not as important as a good structure that provides cover and some "privacy" for the loners. The Procambarus alleni goes to various aquarium plants, so robust, fast-growing plants like nixweed and waterweed or floating plants like frogbit, salvinia and so on. Especially younger and smaller crayfish like to stay in the floating roots.

The sexes are best distinguished from below. While males have V-shaped mating styli (gonopods) at the junction of the carapace and abdomen, females have sex openings (gonopores) at the base of the 2nd pair of walking legs. Females have five pairs of webbed legs, males only 3. After mating, when the male turns the female onto her back or side and holds her with her claws and webbed legs, the female squeezes out 50 to 100 eggs and attaches them to her webbed legs. There she cleans and fans them until after three to five weeks fully developed young crabs hatch. They then remain under the abdomen of the female crayfish for about three days before becoming independent. Young Procambarus alleni are highly cannibalistic, so you need as many hiding places as possible: brown autumn leaves, sintered glass rolls, perforated bricks, special caves, coconut halves, ..

A socialization with dwarf shrimps with similar demands on water values is possible without any problems. Florida crayfish like to eat snails, now and then smaller fish are chased and eaten. Big fish on the other hand like to eat a crayfish, especially freshly skinned animals have nothing to resist. Crabs and large-armed shrimp are also deadly enemies of crayfish.

As a North American crayfish, Procambarus alleni is a potential carrier of the crayfish plague, so it must not be allowed into the wild under any circumstances, as our native crayfish are unable to resist this disease and entire populations are simply wiped out by it. Australian/New Zealand, Indonesian and Papuan crayfish are also affected by this deadly disease and therefore must not come into contact with allenis itself or the water from their aquarium.

As far as food is concerned, the blue Florida crayfish is a very uncomplicated omnivore. We still recommend to avoid moulting problems ect. the Natureholic Krebsfeed , with the Natureholic Krebsfeed we record in our plant the best results in breeding and keeping crayfish.

Our feed recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crayfish Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
