from over 3,000 reviews "The brown posthorn snail is the archetype of Planorbella duryi duryi, which originally comes from southern North America, but has spread throughout the world in aquaristics. Unlike Planorbarius corneus, our native posthorn snail, its shell is relatively smooth, and Planorbella duryi duryi also does not grow as large as the posthorn snail we know from European garden ponds and other bodies of water, at about 2.5 cm. The brown ramshorn snail is bisexual and is capable of self-fertilization. Then only about 4 to 8% of the eggs are fertile, but this is enough to build up a basic population. The brown ramshorn snail prefers sexual reproduction.
The brown ramshorn snail likes to attach its clutches to hard substrates, but also to plant leaves. They have a clock glass shape, so they are more or less round and slightly domed. They also have a fairly sturdy lid. The eggs in the clutch are arranged in a plane. The young snails hatch after two or three weeks, depending on the temperature. Depending on the amount of food, the brown PHS can reproduce very strongly. This makes them a good food snail to breed for puffer fish, predatory snails and other snail eaters. If you want a lot of snails quickly, you can give vegetables like spinach or pumpkin, but also all kinds of fish and shrimp food from the trade.
Of course, you can also keep the brown post horn snail in the aquarium without snail eaters as a scavenging and cleaning troop. If you feed sparingly (in this case the brown PHS does not need to be fed extra, algae growth and food leftovers of the other inhabitants are sufficient for it), the snail population is kept within limits.
The brown post horn snail can besocialized very well with dwarf and fan shrimp, peaceful fish, non-snail-eating snails and also with mussels . Their reproduction rate is usually sufficient, even if snail-eaters such as dwarf crayfish, large crayfish and crabs are in the aquarium or aquaterrarium. However, if you want to ensure a continuous supply of snails, you should set up a species tank for the brown PHS and propagate it specifically as a feeder snail.
The brown post horn snail is very adaptable as far as water values are concerned. In harder water, however, it lives much longer and also grows larger.
Our food recommendation: With the Natureholic Snail Feed Power Paste you create a feeding lawn that is very well accepted by all aufwuchs feeding snails. Also delicate wild-caught snails such as racing snails or staghorn snails, which are stressed after transport and do not go to conventional food, can be fed up well with it.
Our plant recommendation: Use for the planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
Actively prevent outbreaks: With the invisible Natureholic Snail Barrier you prevent the escape and loss of your snails from the aquarium.
