Carbon Rili Shrimp - Neocaridina davidi var. "Carbon Rili"

The Carbon Rili shr imp is one of the newer color breedings of the widely distributed Neocaridina davidi. The offspring of the Carbon Rili shrimp are hereditary. Like the Red Rili, the Carbon Rili has a colored head and abdomen. The body part in between is transparent. In the Carbon Rili the head and abdomen are coal black. This colorway was bred out of the Black Sakura, which means that you can keep these two colorways together without any problems. The females of the Carbon Rili grow up to 3 centimeters, the males do not quite reach this size.

The wild form of the Carbon Rili, the algae shrimp or backstroke shrimp Neocaridina davidi, lives in stagnant and flowing waters in nature. It copes well with somewhat more nutrient-rich water and is overall very adaptable. It has passed this on to its color variants. The Carbon Rili also feels comfortable in very different water values.

Since Carbon Rili shrimp are omnivores and scavengers, they will happily accept just about any food. In the community tank they eat fish food leftovers, algae coverings and dead plant parts, but they will also gladly accept shrimp food specially adapted to their needs. Proteins should only be given twice a week (here a suitable protein food is advisable ), otherwise the animals are very happy to eat food of plant origin. Brown autumn leaves are a good permanent food. It should always be present in an aquarium with Carbon Rili shrimp.

The peaceful Carbon Rili can be socialized with Blue Dream shrimp, with Blue Carbon Rili shrimp and with Black Sakura shrimp without danger of mixing. Here no wild colors will fall in the offspring, but only blue and black animals and black Rilis with blue or transparent body. You can also socialize the Carbon Rili shrimp with other shrimp species, but the animals should at least have similar demands on the water values. An initial stocking of 10 to 20 Carbon Rili shrimp is recommended. Shrimp are group animals, and if there are no conspecifics in sight in the aquarium, this can cause stress. Carbon Rili Shrimp also socialize well with small, peaceful and not too hectic or curious fish, crayfish, freshwater crabs, snails and mussels .

The female carries 20 to 40 eggs under her abdomen for about three to four weeks. After that, fully developed juveniles hatch, which do not have to go through larval stages. They can remain in the aquarium with their parents, as there is no danger of them eating them. In a community aquarium with fish, it is recommended to use mosses to provide cover for the juvenile shrimp.
