In the case of bacterial diseases of the fish, infections with Pseudomonas, Aeromonas or in the case of a Columnaris disease as well as diffuse symptoms such as ulcers, turbidity, fin rot or accelerated respiration, treatment with a suitable medication is recommended. Since antibiotics and antibiotic-like agents such as Nifurpirinol are no longer permitted in the EU without a prescription, an alternative was needed. JBL has launched new fish medications that take a different approach.
There are also effective medications from JBL against the dreaded spot disease, also known as Ichthyo, and against other parasite infestations.
Caution - not all of these fish medications are suitable for use in shrimp tanks or in community aquariums with shrimp! Please observe the instructions for use and the package insert in any case!
The same applies to shrimp: prevention is preferable to cure, and an accurate diagnosis saves money and protects the animals. With Michael Wolfinger's book "Diseases of Freshwater Shrimp in the Aquarium" you can quickly track down problems and recognize and promptly treat any diseases that may occur.
For example, you can recognize a bacterial infection by the animals becoming cloudy, losing parts of limbs, or becoming slow and sluggish. Rust spot disease, on the other hand, is manifested by sunken areas on the body that turn brown and appear rusty. At the latest then action is called for - water changes and proper aquarium hygiene, varied and high quality food and treatment with appropriate medication and support with suitable tonics.
Then you should search for the cause of the bacterial infection, the parasitic disease or the fungal infection and eliminate the stress to which the sick shrimp may be exposed due to unsuitable water values, unsuitable temperatures, lack of oxygen, an excessive number of germs in the aquarium and so on.
