Cryptocoryne usteriana

An impressive water pond species is Cryptocoryne usteriana from the Philippines. Unlike many other water pond species, it grows permanently under water and is therefore not suitable for emerse culture in the greenhouse. Due to this fact, it is very rarely found in the trade. The bullose leaves  grow up to 70cm long, the leaf color is bright medium green with reddish leaf underside. With medium lighting Cryptocoryne usteriana grows ideally in hard, alkaline water and therefore best suited for cichlids from Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika. Even with low CO2 the plant grows quite well and is very undemanding in care. It looks confusingly similar to the better known Cryptocoryne aponogetifolia.
