Dark blue crayfish - Cherax sp. Blue Moon
The Cherax sp. "Blue Moon" is a beautiful blue crayfish, which is particularly attractive in the aquarium due to its peaceful and compatible behavior. It leaves plants largely alone, it can only be that it digs itself a cave and thereby rearranges the furnishings somewhat. It reproduces in the aquarium, but normally does not become a nuisance. The Blue Moon is mainly nocturnal, but with increasing habituation it can be seen more and more often during the day. One of our absolute favorites! - Garnelio
Description

The home of the Cherax sp. Blue Moon is in Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian part of the island of Papua. The exact species to which this beautiful crayfish belongs is not yet known. Its blue-black basic coloration with the almost metallic-blue claws and the bright transverse stripes on the abdominal segments make it a very attractive crayfish. The males continue to captivate with the conspicuous white blisters on the claws. Its quite peaceful nature, with a final body length of about 12-15 cm (without claws!) and a life expectancy of a good 5-8 years make it an interesting aquarium inhabitant.

The keeping of these fascinating crayfishes is not very difficult. A pair can already be kept in aquariums from 80 cm edge length. For several pairs a tank from 120-150 cm is recommended. The aquarium should be rich in structure with many caves and stones. As it is also the case with many other crayfish species, a stable setup should be ensured, because the animals like to dig and otherwise it can come to collapses. With a good and varied diet they do not eat plants, so the aquarium can be well planted. Since crayfish are true escape artists, a gapless cover is to be absolutely paid attention!

No great demands are made on the water values. The pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5, the GH up to 20 and the KH up to 10. At temperatures of about 20 to 24°C in clean and oxygen-rich water the Cherax sp. "Blue Moon" feels very well.

With good keeping and condition of the animals it comes several times in the year to the mating. After mating the female carries the about 20-40 eggs under her tail for about 4-6 weeks, and also the freshly hatched crayfish for a few days until they are left to fend for themselves. If you provide a good food supply and plenty of hiding places, for example in a layer of brown foliage, cannibalism rarely occurs.

In their natural habitat Cherax sp. "Blue Moon" feed mainly on detritus, brown foliage and the odd mosquito larvae, but they will also readily accept a variety of foods such as fresh food (nettle, spinach), granulated and flake food and frozen food. Special crayfish food is of course also taken very readily.

Cherax sp. blue Moon are peaceful and rather nocturnal, which is why they can be kept well in a community aquarium. The fish should not have too long fins and should not live on the bottom. Small nimble fish and shrimp are usually left alone. Snails are readily cracked and eaten.
Contact with Central and North American crayfish, as well as the water in which they are kept, should be refrained from, as these are carriers of crayfish plague, which is fatal to the Cherax sp. "Blue Moon".

Our food recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crayfish Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.

Hallo Michelle, vielen Dank fuer deine Frage! Alle Cherax Arten koennen untereinander vergesellschaftet werden. Das Becken muss allerdings gross genug dazu sein und genug Verstecke bieten.
