Endler guppy male natural form - Poecilia wingei

The Endler Guppy in its Natural form originates from South America and is also called Poecilia wingei. With him the Guppy, the Poeocilia reticulata, is very closely related, which is why these two can cross and even produce fertile hybrids. The keeping of these great comrades is quite easy, which is why Endler Guppies are also great for beginners.

With its spectacular coloration, the natural form of the Ender Guppy is a great Eyecatcher in the aquarium, which also grows to a size of just 2 cm. In contrast to this the Endler Females 3,5-4 cm and are plain gray colored with a black pregnancy spot at the end of the belly. Especially during the Mating season males are on the move all day.

As viviparous toothcarps, Endlers have young that they give birth to alive. The adults do not prey on their offspring as much as normal aquarium guppies. Litters occur at 4-6 week intervals. They are smaller (only 10-25 baby fish), but Endlers reproduce very effectively because many more animals per litter come through. The young fish can stay in the parent tank. By the way, the females can still give birth to offspring for months, because they can store the sperm of the males.

Endler Guppies tend to live in the upper layers of the water and like to pick up approaching food or also a possibly existing scum from the water surface with their upper mouth. They also eat algae and decaying plant parts. In the aquarium, a special guppy food has proven to be good, but they also love scalded or soft vegetables or dried, soaked  vegetable chips, as well as frozen food and live food.

Endler Guppies live in nature as in the aquarium in rather loose groups, the swarm behavior is not particularly strong. Green Tiger Endlers need medium to hard water and even tolerate slightly salty brackish water. An aquarium temperature of 22-28 °C is perfect for Poecilia wingei, a heater is therefore not absolutely necessary for a successful keeping.

The socialization of Endler Guppies with robust, reproductive shrimp works quite well, even if small shrimp babies are eaten from time to time. Especially an all-male group is not as "dangerous" for shrimp as a mixed group of males and females, because the males with their smaller body size and smaller mouth can handle less large shrimp. If there is enough moss and other hiding places in the aquarium, enough shrimp of a robust species like the colorful Neocaridina davidi  or Sulawesi land shrimp will get through. Because Endler sleep on the bottom, they can become prey for crayfish.
