Espes Keilfleckbärbling (Trigonostigma espei) from Thailand and Cambodia in Southeast Asia. These small danios only grow to a maximum size of 3 cm, with males remaining smaller and also somewhat more slender than females. Trigonostigma espei has a red-orange to silver base color, a lighter belly, transparent to red-orange fins, and the namesake black and bright orange wedge-shaped longitudinal spot that extends from the middle of the belly to the caudal fin. A narrow black spot also sits just behind the gills.
Espes wedge spotted danio, also called aspen barb, prefers soft to medium hard, humic water with a pH of 6 to 7 and 22-28 °C. In cooler water, this beautiful miniature fish is described as much livelier. Large groups show interesting schooling behavior, in smaller groups the males behave more territorial. The aquarium should be somewhat shaded by floating plants. Espes Keilfleckbärbling prefers calmer, low-flow corners and needs some structure from plants and root wood.
The small size makes Trigonostigma espei a good by-fish for bee shrimp, tiger shr imp or neocaridina, provided there are enough hiding places for the shrimp babies. It cannot be ruled out that one or the other careless young shrimp will be eaten. Since Espes Keilfleckbärbling likes to use large leaves for sleeping, a socialization with crayfish or dwarf crayfish is not optimal. An aquarium of 54 liters or larger is sufficient for keeping a school of Espes Dwarf Crayfish.
Trigonostigma espei eats besides fine flake food or fine-grained granules for nano fish also very gladly frozen food or live food of suitable size.
Breeding Espes Keilfleckbärbling is not very easy: The fish need very soft water rich in humic substances with an acidic pH value. Spawning takes place on the underside of large-leaved aquatic plants. The fish are considered very choosy in their choice of mate. After spawning, breeding pairs are transferred from the breeding aquarium, as they would eat their eggs. The fry are raised with slipper fish and other infusoria until they reach a size where they can eat artemia euplii.
Our food recommendation: The professional NatureHolic Nanofeed is a staple food for all small aquarium fish. This mini fish food and rearing food is a fine soft granulate which, thanks to its softness, resembles the consistency of tiny crustaceans and insect larvae and protects the delicate mouths of nanofish and fish fry from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
