The European freshwater shrimp is very variable in terms of coloration, from transparent to brown, gray and black to dark blue everything is possible. Depending on temperature, environment and stocking density, the animals can even be slightly pink colored. It is often observed that a dominant animal, a so-called Black Knight, turns very dark, while the remaining animals remain rather light. With about 4 cm they reach a very respectable size for dwarf shrimp. The European freshwater shrimp proves to be extremely useful in the aquarium, as they primarily graze biofilms and algae growth, preventing them from proliferating. They are also very fond of eating detritus, plant debris and dead animals, thus keeping the aquarium clean. This type of feeding requires a lot of time, which means that European freshwater shrimp are active practically all day long and are therefore wonderful to watch.
The European Freshwater Shrimp is absolutely peaceful and can therefore be socialized with almost all species of fish and invertebrates, provided the housemates are also compatible and peaceful. It does not interbreed with other shrimp species, but needs cold water and cannot tolerate temperatures above 25°C for extended periods.
In community tanks with fish, European freshwater shrimp usually do not need to be fed specifically, as they will find enough food there in the form of algae, detrius or food scraps. However, they are always grateful for brown autumn foliage - it is grazed and later also eaten if it has been broken down by microorganisms. In an invertebrate-only aquarium, supplemental feeding is necessary. The European freshwater shrimp readily accepts special shrimp food adapted to its needs and is very grateful for a suitable protein food twice a week.
The females of the European freshwater shrimp carry up to 1500 eggs under their abdomen in the months between April and August, from which very small larvae hatch after a few weeks. They can be raised in the parent aquarium, provided there are no fish in it that would eat the larvae. The larvae need very fine food, some mulm on the bottom also helps in rearing.
On delivery of the European freshwater shrimp you will receive a relatively young form (see picture) of the shrimp, but they reach a size of 4cm when fully grown.
The younger the animal the longer you can look at these fascinating shrimp.
