Description

One of the most popular aquarium fish are fighting fish Betta splendens, which belong to the labyrinth fish. The red fighting fish is another great color variety that really shines in the aquarium. With their quite undemanding attitude and their trustfulness, fighting fish swim their way into every heart quite quickly. The animals originating from relatively oxygen-poor waters in Asia can be maintained very well even by beginners in small aquariums from 60 liters. Especially male fighting fish stand out due to their imposing fin size and fin shapes. As loners, male fighting fish should preferably be kept alone, but it is also possible to keep them in community aquariums with fish of other species. However, the stress that may occur here can lead to a shortened lifespan.

In gender, fighting fish differ mainly in the color intensity and the size of their fins. The males can be three times as large as the females. The latter usually do not show such strong colors. The sexes can also be distinguished by the female's spawning papilla, which is located directly in front of the anal fin.

As a foam nest builder, the male artistically creates a nest on the water surface with the help of aquatic plants and also the aquarium glass. After mating, he collects the eggs laid by the female from the bottom and transports them to the foam nest. It guards this for about two days until the young are hatched. The larvae feed on their yolk sac for the next two days and "hang" vertically from the glass or aquatic plants. They can be raised with infusoria, nauplii, but also with dust food and grow quite rapidly depending on the temperature. As soon as the labyrinth organ of the young develops, they rise to the water surface and breathe atmospheric oxygen. To prevent them from igniting this, the rearing aquarium should be covered. Later, the small fighting fish must be placed and raised individually, the space required for breeding fighting fish should not be underestimated.

Although fighting fish can already be kept in small aquariums, it is recommended to keep them individually from 54 liters. The aquarium does not have to have any special equipment and may even be rather shady and heavily weedy, but should still leave access to the water surface, so that the red fighting fish can breathe. Reflective and glaring bottom grounds they do not like very much, so dark colors should be preferred. It makes hardly any demands on the water values, if the hygiene is right. The temperature should be 24-28 °C and should not fall below 26 °C permanently, otherwise it will get sick.

As a strong character animal Red Fighting Fish can be kept only conditionally with well reproducing dwarf shrimps. It is possible that the offspring will be eaten, it can also happen that it pecks at an adult specimen. Alternatively, Amano shr imps are a good choice. Dwarf crayfish can pinch the long fins of the Red Fighting Fish, which is why they, like crayfish, are not suitable for socialization. Other calm fish that do not pinch the long fins of the Red Fighting Fish and do not constantly swim into its territory, which it defends, can be socialized with it. Blue-eyes are especially suitable, but also loricariids .

As a carnivore, the Red Fighting Fish feeds on invertebrates and insects such as mosquito larvae in its habitat. In the aquarium it can be fed excellently with a soft granulated food for bettas. He is particularly happy about regular feeding with large live foods or frozen foods such as small crustaceans and worms such as white mosquito larvae, enchytrae, artemia, daphnia or grindal worms .

Our food recommendation: The soft granules NatureHolic Bettafeed has been optimized in its composition to meet the needs of fighting fish and other carnivores. However, fighting fish do not only need pure animal proteins. A small proportion of vegetable substances imitates the intestinal contents of the prey animals, with which the beautiful bettas in nature ultimately consume a certain proportion of plant food. Garlic extract has a strengthening effect and can supportthe immune system and also make it strong against parasites.

Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
