The Sumatran fern, filigree fern or fine-leaved horn fern is an aquatic fern from the tropics and subtropics of Southeast Asia. It has very fine leaves. Normally Ceratopteris thalictroides grows in muddy shallow water, sometimes in rice paddies. Although the Sumatra fern forms roots, it can also be cultivated free floating in the aquarium.
In the tank, the graceful fern plant needs enough space, because it grows very quickly and thus consumes a lot of nutrients, which are not available to algae. Medium light is sufficient for the Sumatra fern, CO2 fertilization is not necessary.
To propagate, cut off older leaves and let them float on the water surface. Young plants will soon form in the notches between their lobes.
Sumatra fern is also excellent as a spawning substrate, and shrimp love its fine structures and are very happy to graze the feathery filigree leaves.
In shallow water and very humid environments, the filigree fern sprouts emerse leaves and can therefore also be kept in certain zones in a paludarium.
Our recommendation: For a splendid plant growth we recommend the premium nutrient medium when setting up a new plant NatureHolic GroundBooster
