Algae fern Azolla filiculoides is also known as mosquito fern or fairy moss. This beautiful filigree floating plant, thanks to its undemanding nature, grows in almost all conditions and can even overwinter in the garden pond.
Fairy moss is a great nutrient binder and thus inhibits algae growth very effectively. It forms a symbiotic relationship with cyanobacteria, making it especially effective at reducing nitrates.
In the roots of Azolla filiculoides, the young of fish and shrimp find an optimal retreat. The algae fern also makes bright aquariums "cozier" for shy animals, as it shades the tanks very well.
Algae fern is also very hardy in nature. Its spores survive cold weather and even frost quite easily. Azolla filiculoides reproduces all by itself through branching and falling apart of the plants. Of course, the shoot axes can also be divided and propagated in this way. Fairy moss can be easily reduced and kept in checkby fishing.
If Azolla filiculoides is cultivated outdoors, it takes on a pretty brown-red coloration in the fall. This floating fern can easily overwinter outdoors, but if you want to be absolutely sure that you will still have fairy moss on your pond next year, you can overwinter a small portion frost-free and in bright light to be on the safe side.
Algae fern is often sold under the synonym Azolla carolina.
