The Guadeloupe Nixweed Najas guadalupensis comes from the American continent. It is extremely easy to maintain and grows extremely fast. The plant can be cultivated floating, but if you plant it, it also sprouts roots. Its fine succulent green leaves take on a reddish-brown hue under a lot of light, especially at the shoot tips. In the background it is a great eye-catcher even in large aquariums, becoming very dense very quickly.
Especially for shrimp tanks and in aquariums with crayfish, this very robust, fast-growing plant is well suited, since its fine structure offers shrimp many hiding places and since crayfish eat Nixweed, but thanks to its rapid growth it cannot be eradicated so quickly.
Thanks to its extremely fast growth, Nixweed absorbs a lot of nutrients, which are thus no longer available to algae. Especially in newly set up aquariums, a few shoots of nixweed are almost a must for algae prevention.
The shoots break relatively quickly. From each severed piece becomes a new plant, the reproduction of Nixkraut is therefore very simple.
