The Gold Molly is a pure golden shimmering breeding form of the Molly, which is very widespread in Central America and South America. In the wild, the molly or pointed molly, with scientific name Poecilia sphenops, lives mainly in estuaries and the lower reaches of rivers, sometimes in brackish water. Poecilia sphenops var. Gold is very popular as a robust aquarium fish also for beginners and is very suitable for an aquarium with medium to hard water. A small addition of salt is possible. In aquaristics, various breeding forms of the beautiful and very easy to care for Spitzmaulärpfling have been around for well over 100 years. Like guppies, swordtails and platies, they belong to the live-bearing toothcarps, which means that the females give birth to live young. A litter contains approximately 30-80 baby fish.
Male Gold Mollies grow to a body length of about 4 to 6 inches, while female Mollies grow much larger at 6 to 10 inches long. An aquarium with a volume of 80 liters or more is suitable for keeping a group of Gold Mollies. The males can be recognized by their extended anal fin, which functions as a sexual organ and is called gonopodium, in addition to their size. Females are much rounder in build than male Gold Mollies and do not have a gonopodium.
Female Gold Mollies not only become pregnant after a successful mating, they can also store the male's semen for a long time. This allows them to continue giving birth to fry for months without having to mate again. For this reason, surprising offspring still occur from time to time even in pure female groups. Adult Gold Mollies will chase after their offspring and eat the baby fish. If the aquarium is well stocked with fine-feathered plants, the baby fish will find hiding places, and thus significantly more fry will come up.
Gold Mollies need the protection and security of the group, please do not keep them individually. If you don't want to breed specifically a certain color, you can of course mix the different varieties. We recommend a group size of 10 fish as a starting stock.
Water temperatures of 24 to 28 °C are ideal for the beautiful Gold Mollies. Despite their robustness, these beautiful live-bearing ornamental fish are quite sensitive to temperature fluctuations. Therefore, please adjust the fresh water to the temperature of the aquarium water when changing water.
Gold Mollies are good aquarium partners for dwarf crayfish of the genus Cambarellus or for larger shrimp such as Amano shrimp. A socialization with smaller invertebrates is only conditionally recommendable, small dwarf shrimps are eaten. Robust and assertive species such as the Sulawesi shrimp, which copes well with hard water, would still be conceivable, also with Neocaridina a socialization can work. However, then the aquarium must be really densely planted and offer many hiding places. A socialization with larger crayfish is possible, but it may result in the crayfish chasing the mollies or at least nipping them. With other peaceful aquarium fishes the keeping is of course very well possible, provided that the requirements to the water are approximately congruent.
Poecilia sphenops is an omnivore and likes animal food like live and frozen food as well as vegetable food. The Goldmolly likes to pluck at algae and also eats other growth. Water plants with soft foliage are also sometimes nibbled. As a preventative measure, you can ensure a good supply of vegetable food and prevent some herbivory by feeding soft or over-broiled vegetables such as peas, tomatoes, spinach leaves, zucchini and pumpkin, as well as over-broiled greens such as dandelion or nettle leaves . Gold Mollies are known to be not very picky eaters and will also happily go for flake foods for omnivorous aquarium fish or granular foods.
Our food recommendation: The fragrant NatureHolic Guppyfeed was tailor-made for the needs of guppies and other viviparous fish in the aquarium. In addition to high-quality animal ingredients, it also contains vegetable components that benefit guppies & co. The soft granules protect the sensitive mouth of the viviparous from injuries caused by hard food grains and provide the fish with a natural feeding experience.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
