Around 2007 the cute guinea fowl dan io appeared for the first time in the aquaristics and at that time already "hit like a bomb". Its easy keeping and suitability for nano aquariums have always given the Danio margaritatus such a large fan base that in the meantime even imports from its small habitat in Thailand and Myanmar had to be regulated in order not to completely eradicate it in the wild. Fortunately, in the meantime it has been successfully bred, and other areas where it has been found have become known. Its bright spots on the otherwise olive-gray body brought it the name Galaxybärbling, because its color reminds of a night sky. This mini fish likes to live in groups and behaves peacefully.
Males and females can be distinguished by the color gradient on their anal fin, as well as their color intensity. Males are usually darker in base color with lighter spots, also the flanks may be darker in color. Their anal fin is bright red with strong black stripes. Females, on the other hand, appear somewhat paler, more rounded, and have a more orange anal fin. With a final size of just under 2 cm they are real mini fish.
To get them ready for breeding, it is sufficient to spoil them with black mosquito larvae several times a day for a few days. The males impress each other with erect fins, circling and harmless threatening gestures and then pursue their chosen female into fine feathery plants or a spawning substrate such as moss, where eggs are then deposited. Unfortunately, guinea fowl are extremely thorough spawn predators, rarely missing even one egg, so breeding in a wedge tank or spawning aquarium is more promising. After about 5 days the tiny young hatch, which are almost invisible to the naked eye and look "like a line in the landscape". For the first three days they feed on their yolk sac, after which they can be fed infusoria and microworms, as well as dust foods such as NatureHolic YoungFeed, and raised on freshly hatched nauplii. Since guinea fowl are the nightmare of any accompanying fauna and any hatchling that has not taken refuge in the substrate or a plant at one will be eaten, the young should not be reintroduced to their parents until they reach a significant body mass. Therefore, guinea fowl may eat young shrimp. However, in a distinctly weedy aquarium, they can be offered ample hiding places.
Although the guinea fowl occasionally has a "big mouth," it is sometimes shy and prefers a retreat of fine plants where it can draw new energy and courage. Although this mini fish is appealing to keep in a small desk aquarium, it should be said that it should have at least 54 liters to let off steam. Not only is it very diurnal, it can even lose its color, become very shy, and stop reproducing if kept in too tight a space.
Since Danio margaritatus originates from quite cool and alkaline waters, it can be kept at room temperature around 19°C without any problems. Its water values may vary from a total hardness between 5-20° dH, a KH of 3-20° dKH and a pH between 7-7,5. The substrate plays a rather subordinate role for it, however, its new home should be equipped with roots and stones, as well as moss cushions and partly dense plants, into which especially females, which have had enough of flirting, retreat.
As mentioned at the beginning, the guinea fowl danio is one that not only loves to eat its accompanying fauna, but generally also often and gladly needs a snack. This could probably even be the main reason why the animals offered in the trade sometimes look "crooked and crooked" - because all sorts of things fit into these small fish! The guinea fowl can be accustomed to almost every flake and granluate food. However, they prefer to munch their way through a varied offer of small live foods and frozen foods ranging from microworms to mosquito larvae - but a real spectacle is offered to the keeper when a freshly hatched cloud of Artemia nauplii is offered!
It can easily be socialized with other similarly peaceful fish and also invertebrates.
Our food recommendation: The professional NatureHolic Nanofeed is a staple food for all small aquarium fish. This mini fish food and rearing food is a fine soft granulate which, thanks to its softness, resembles the consistency of tiny crustaceans and insect larvae and protects the delicate mouths of nanofish and fish fry from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: For planting, use NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
