Hairy trumpet snail - Thiara cancellata

Thiara cancellata, the hairy lace snail from Southeast Asia, belongs to the Thiaridae. Its somewhat more stocky shell is light brown to reddish brown with fine spiral grooves, slightly contrasting in color, and has long, very thin dark appendages that look like long bristly hairs. Growth in the aquarium then no longer shows these hairs, but the beautiful pattern remains as do the pre-existing bristles. Thiara cancellata reaches a size of 3 cm when fully grown. Males and females are externally indistinguishable.

Like the other snails from the genus Thiara, Thiara cancellata releases living offspring, but - and this is its peculiarity - in larval form. In nature, these free-swimming larvae are washed into the sea from the freshwater streams where the Hairy Tower Cap Snail lives, and develop there. In the aquarium reproduction is impossible.

Thiara cancellata is an extremely peaceful and robust snail that likes to dig and feed on food scraps and other waste that accumulates in the community aquarium. It eats brown autumn leaves as well as algae deposits, but it will also eat special snail food and other food like pumpkin, nettle, flakes or tabs.

Thiara cancellata can be kept very well together with shrimps, peaceful fish and other peaceful snails in the aquarium.

The hairy trumpet snail is also not very picky about the water values. The pH value should be 7 to 8.5, the KH above 3, a GH up to 25 is tolerated very well. Temperatures of 22 to 26 °C are optimal.
