Recommended for breeding tanks and any freshly set up aquarium is the fast-growing hornwort, a highly effective nutrient eater and a sure remedy against unwelcome algae of all kinds. Hornwort simply leaves no food basis for the algae and, due to its enormously fast growth as a strong consumer, consumes nutrient surpluses that would otherwise promote algae plagues. In addition, the fine needle-shaped long leaves and the thin stems are very attractive! Hornwort is very easy to maintain and propagate after the change to the new conditions in the aquarium and then shows itself to be extremely robust. Hornwort - Ceratophyllum demersum - Dennerle Portion

The hornwort is a cosmopolitan, found in many waters worldwide. We found the free-swimming stem plant in huge populations in a tributary of the Rio Miranda on the edge of the Pantanal in South America. The growth rate of the stems is enormous, so it must be permanently cut back. Ceratophyllum is considered a "wonder weapon" against algae growth. The explanation is quite simple: the plant is a strong nutrient consumer and deprives the algae of their food basis. The use of hornwort is recommended for any new setup.
