Horsehead loach - Acanthopsis dialuzona
Even if it does not eat carrots, the horsehead loach is a particularly pretty representative among the loaches. With its long face and very unique character, it is a very special member in the aquarium, which you can not get enough of - if you see the beauty that tends to burrow. - Garnelio

Description

The horsehead loach, sometimes also offered as trunk lo ach or crocodile lo ach, has its natural distribution in Southeast Asia and is found there in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Whereas from there actually several different species are known, whichwere summarized so far all under the name  Acantopsis dialuzona or Acantopsis choirorhynchos, the Acantopsis rungthipae, which is imported regularly from Thailand, is probably the most well-known. The German name Pferdekopf- or Krokodilschmerle (horse-headed or crocodile loach) is probably due to the distinctive looking head - which indeed at first glance resembles a horse's face. Crocodile loach, probably because of the elongated mouth section, which could be remotely reminiscent of a crocodile mouth.

Altogether the horsehead loach is a rather slender, slender and very elongated looking representative among the loaches with a disproportionately large head and body tapering to the caudal fin. The inconspicuous, beige coloration and low-contrast pattern of the animals is based on the natural substrate on which the animals occur in nature and serves as camouflage on sandy soils. The camouflage is completed by the fact that the animals often burrow completely into the ground and only a pair of eyes that look out of the ground gives a hint that there could be a fish there. Since the animals are rather nocturnal, they are often found in this camouflage mode during the day, which they then only take off for feeding. Then they immediately leave the camouflage mode and go directly into the feeding mode, where they rummage the substrate very thoroughly, vividly and intensively with their long snouts for food. Attempts to cultivate a fine bottom feeder in the aquarium will be stifled to the core by this behavior and would only lead to frustration on the part of the aquarist.

The natural habitat of these loaches consists of predominantly sandy, clear rivers and streams with moderate to strong currents. These requirements should be taken into account when designing the aquarium and fine gravel, or even better sandy substrate should be used at least in parts of the aquarium, e.g. the foreground. Also no too small tanks should be chosen, if one considers that the animals become after all up to 22 cm large; 120 cm edge length would be regarded thereby as lowest limit. With the planting, however, there is no limit to your own creativity, as long as there is enough free swimming space and substrate (for camouflage activities and for burrowing).

Animals that live most of their time buried in the ground are probably to be classified as rather calm and indeed the horsehead loach is a rather peaceful representative of the loaches that can be socialized with both Dwarf shrimps and other calm fish. However, socialization with dwarf crayfish or crayfish should be avoided, as these could injure the loach.

The preferred food of the omnivorous horsehead loach consists of live food in the form of anything worm-like, such as Mosquito larvae, Enchytraea and Tubifex. However, they will also readily eat Frozen food and can be accustomed to high-quality commercial dry food, such as granulated food or flake food.

Breeding of horsehead loaches in the aquarium is said to be possible, however, there are no reliable reports about this so far.

Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Cichfeed has a grain size of 1.5 mm and is therefore also suitable for larger fish. NH Cichfeed is a soft granulate for predominantly carnivorous fish. It has the same consistency as small crustaceans and insect larvae that fish naturally eat, and the soft granules protect the fish's mouth from micro-injuries that can result from hard feed granules.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.

Das wäre keine gute Idee, pflege die Fächergarnele besser ohne Fische.
