from over 3,000 reviews "Hierodula membranacea, also known as Indian giant mantis, is a classic beginner species in keeping mantids. This robust mantis can reach a size of up to 10 cm and is very tolerant of small mistakes in keeping. Therefore, the species is also very popular in terraristics and is well suited for novices.
As far as diet is concerned, the Indian Giant Mantis is not picky and will eat almost anything that fits its fangs. For small larvae, Drosophila and ovenfish are recommended, while later flies, moths and cockroaches should be the main items on the menu. Occasionally, crickets and crickets can also be offered for variety.
Since the Indian Giant Mantis is native to India, it requires temperatures between 26 and 30 °C during the day and temperatures should drop to 18 to 20 °C at night. Humidity should be at 50%. The minimum dimensions for the terrarium of an adult H. membranacea are 20x20x30cm and from L3/L4 onwards single keeping is obligatory.
The Indian Giant Mantis has an imposing appearance with its green coloration and is easy to breed. It can also be kept freely in the room without a terrarium, which makes it additionally attractive. The expected final size is 7-9 cm and the species originates from South and Southwest Asia. The substrate should be a peat and sand mixture and supplemented with climbing branches and live plants. The Indian Giant Mantis is diurnal and feeds on insects.
