Gobies in nature

Gobies are the most species-rich group of bony fishes. They live in the sea, in brackish water areas or also in fresh water. Their pectoral fins are usually fused to form a suction fin, which they can use to hold onto the substrate so that even a stronger current does not wash them away. Gobies usually do not have a swim bladder and can only make very clumsy, awkward swimming movements. Mostly they move along the bottom or use leaves or decoration to reach higher water layers. The gobies common in freshwater aquaristics are usually also pure freshwater species or are sometimes found in the brackish water of estuaries or mangroves.

Basically, gobies do not grow very large, most species remain under 10 cm long. They live in all oceans and are also found in brackish and fresh water practically all over the world. Many gobies dig burrows, especially to raise their young, but also to hide from predators.

Gobies in the aquarium

Bottom-oriented gobies often fit well in community aquariums with fish that inhabit the higher water layers. They should not be socialized with shrimp because they are ambush hunters and hunt very effectively. Their large mouths can handle even larger shrimp without problems. Adult Amano shrimp should be an exception, they are too big to be eaten. Crayfish and gobies will almost certainly get in each other's way, because they claim the same habitats for themselves.

Gobies are also a rather difficult stock in a planted aquarium - especially the cave-building species dig a lot and can dig up or bury straight bottom cover under gravel. However, robust plants with deep roots do not pose a problem. Gobies like to dig under shallow stones or roots. Water values in the aquarium vary with the species maintained. There are gobies which tolerate very hard water up to brackish water well, and others which prefer soft water - and again species for which it may also be medium hard water in the aquarium. Please note the requirements of the ornamental fish, which you will find in the article descriptions. Here at Garnelio in the online store you can also buy rarely kept gobies, including the pretty pastel gobies or algae-eating gobies from the genus Stiphodon. Depending on the species, breeding is quite easy and can even work in a community aquarium, or quite tricky - or something in between.

Feeding of gobies in the aquarium

Depending on the species, gobies are carnivores, omnivores or even algae eaters. However, all gobies are happy about live food in the aquarium, they hunt with great pleasure and skill. It is important to know that many gobies in the aquarium are lurking hunters and can sit quietly in one spot for a long time, lulling their prey into safety. Then there is a quick snap and the small animals are food. Gobies also like to eat frozen food, possibly after a period of habituation during which you give frozen food and live food at the same time. This way the gobies tend to grab the frozen food accidentally in the beginning and get used to it. In the same way, they can be accustomed to artificial foods such as our NatureHolic foods for all carnivorous or omnivorous fish. The special, well thought-out formula consists of only the highest quality ingredients and supports the vitality and health of our ornamental fish in the aquarium. Best to order now!

Conclusion

Gobies are true clowns that build up a real relationship with their keeper and love to bounce around the front glass. They interact with their conspecific, they threaten and impress, they court females and build impressive caves. Some of them are really beautifully patterned or somewhat less spectacularly colored, and they always provide something to laugh and look at. Gobies are simply great aquarium fish and depending on the species even highly recommended for a community tank. Please note the article descriptions for the individual gobies, in which we give you detailed information about water values, reproduction, the preferred food, a possible socialization with other aquarium fish or invertebrates and also about the setup of the aquarium for gobies. In our Garnelio online store you can buy gobies, which you can unfortunately rarely buy for your aquarium in the local ornamental fish store.
