Killifish in nature

Killifishes, or egg-laying toothcarps, are distantly related to guppies and platies, which are also toothcarps but are live-bearing.Ricefish such as the neon rice carp also belong in this extensive relationship.

Egg-laying toothcarps are found in North America and South America, in southern Europe, in Asia and in Africa. These colorful ornamental fish are generally adapted to life in partially or even completely dry waters, living in nature in small streams, in ditches, and in puddles. Egg-laying toothcarps are good jumpers, this must be taken into account when keeping them in aquariums and always keep the tank well covered. They are not suitable for open aquariums. Egg-laying toothcarps are said to be quite short-lived, but this is not true for all species, on the contrary.

Killifishes from West Africa and Asia

The genera Fundulopanchax, Aphyosemion, Epiplatys and others known in aquaristics come from West Africa, Aplocheilus comes from Asia. There the ornamental fish live in waters, which sometimes do not dry out at all or only for a very short time. The water values at the places of discovery vary strongly. They range from a pH of 4.7 to a pH of 8, the temperature is 20-30 °C, the water hardness is from hardly detectable to medium hard. In the aquarium, West African killies do well with a water temperature of 24 °C, a pH between 6 and 7 and soft to medium hard water. In harder water they will not spawn. Most of the time breeding these killis is not difficult at all, because the eggs don't really need a drying phase. Here at Garnelio in the store we offer a good selection of West African and Asian Killies of the above mentioned genera for sale.

Killifishes from East Africa

From East Africa come rather short-lived Killifishes, which are distinct seasonal fish. Their home waters dry up completely and carry water only during the rainy season. Therefore, the fish live in nature only for a short time - a few months - but offer the eye a true firework of colors during this time. In the aquarium they are a bit more long-lived, but they should be reared in any case. The Nothobranchius offered in our online store, for example, belong to this group of fish. The water values for East African killies in the aquarium should be about medium hard, the temperature should be about 24-26 °C, the pH should be between 6 and 7. The permanent eggs, which are placed in substrates such as peat, absolutely need a dry period of 3-12 months (depending on the species) to hatch. This sounds tricky at first, but in practice it is not difficult at all and can be done without much effort. The East African Killies in the aquarium reward the aquarist for his effort with really great, iridescent colors and a real firework of patterns. Here at Garnelio in the online store you can buy Killifish from East Africa suitable for beginners for your aquariums.

The feeding of Killifishes

Killifishes are carnivores without exception, they like to hunt and are very happy about the addition of live food in the aquarium. Frozen food is also eaten after a period of habituation, as are our NatureHolic foods for all carnivorous fish. The special, well thought-out recipe of only the highest quality ingredients that support the vitality and health of the ornamental fish make our fish food a perfect food for small carnivores like the great Killis. Best to order right away! Especially recommended: the Protein Wafers, a great snack for egg-laying toothcarps.

Conclusion

Killis are a true color spectacle - especially the East Africans look just spectacular. And not all species are as short-lived as many aquarists fear. These great aquarium fishes with their very interesting reproduction are great candidates for a species tank, occasionally they even fit into a community aquarium - please have a look at the article descriptions for more info, where we go into more detail about the socialization of Killis. A super nice enrichment for a freshwater aquarium, not very demanding and really great to watch are these beautiful and unusual ornamental fish. In our Garnelio Online Shop you can buy these aquarium fish from the family of the egg-laying tooth carps for your aquarium, which are unfortunately very rare in the ornamental fish trade.
