Threadfishes in nature

The gouramis belong to the labyrinth fishes. They can be divided into two groups, the Western Threadfish from India and Myanmar and the Eastern Threadfish from Southeast Asia. They live in floodplains with dense vegetation, but are also found in shallow waters with heavy weed cover. In the aquarium they also prefer densely planted tanks with little current.

Some small representatives of the gourami in aquaristics like the dwarf gourami Colisa (Trichogaster) lalia or the honey gourami Colisa (Trichogaster) chuna are mentioned in our blog post "The Nanofish Encyclopedia" because they belong to the nanofishes thanks to their small size.

The colorfulness of even the wild forms of these peaceful ornamental fish for the aquarium is incredibly attractive, but there are now even cultivated forms from aquaristics, which also convince with bright and unusual colors.

Their thread-like pectoral fins have given the threadfish their name. They are used as touch organ, also conspecifics are thoroughly examined with it. It is especially nice for children to observe how a gourami orientates itself in its biotope in the aquarium and how it interacts with conspecifics.

In addition to gills, gourami have a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe oxygen from the air, much like a lung. This allows gourami to live in water with slightly less oxygen. However, they always need access to the open water surface. In our online store you can buy the most popular species of gourami in aquaristics - spotted mosaic gourami, beautifully colored honey gourami, the small but beautiful dwarf gourami and many more. In our online store we also offer rarely available color forms of gourami for purchase for your aquarium, such as the blue breeding form of the dwarf gourami and more.

Dwarf gourami in the aquarium

The Dwarf Gourami Trichopodus lalius, synonyms Trichogaster lalius or also Colisa lalia, are available in great color forms. In addition to the red light blue striped wild form, you can also buy the blue form of the dwarf gourami in our online store as well as a beautiful red dwarf gourami variant. The Dwarf Gouramis are said to be susceptible if the water values do not fit, so you should take good care that you meet their demands on the aquarium water. They need humic substances in the water and soft to medium hard aquarium water. Lowering the temperature over winter to about 20-24 °C and increasing it in summer to 24-30 °C is equal to their natural biotope and can prolong their life. In winter, the water level in the aquarium should also be lowered to about 20 cm.

Large gouramis in the aquarium

Large gouramis are perfect ornamental fish for a large aquarium with rather calm conspecifics, and here at Garnelio Online Shop you can buy both wild forms and colorful cultivated forms. Large gourami are calm and peaceful aquarium inhabitants that do not actively hunt. They like densely planted aquariums and sometimes even tolerate soft to hard water, for example Trichogastertrichopterus is such a candidate. Humic substances in the water are favorable. The pretty mosaic gourami Trichopodus leeri, on the other hand, prefers its aquarium water in the soft to medium-hard range.

Feeding gourami in the aquarium - choosing the right fish food

The threadfishes popular in the aquaristics are typical omnivores, which sometimes tug at algae, but also like to eat frozen food or live food. They prefer food that can be eaten at the water surface. You can also make them very happy with flake food or granulated food, and from time to time they even like to eat some soft cooked green food like spinach. happy, but you can also get them full with frozen food.
With the tasty NatureHolic main feed your Fafis are in any case optimally supplied.

Offspring of gourami

The breeding of gourami is possible in the aquarium. Like all labyrinth fish, small and large gourami build their foam nests on the water surface - sometimes involving water plants or floating plants. After courtship and mating, the males engage in active brood care. In a breeding aquarium this is much less stressful. Here you can catch the female out, which would only stress the male anyway. When the fry swim freely, you can also catch the male and feed the young ones with Artemia. About breeding Artemia you can find a detailed blog by Garnelio here: "Artemia züchten, halten, vermehren & verfüttern - Alles wissenswertes über Artemia".

Conclusion

The calm peaceful fish are very popular in aquaristics, and rightly so. Threadfish are a great addition to a community aquarium with other quiet fish, or a super candidate for a species aquarium. They have no problems at all with planted aquariums, on the contrary. Their calmness and the beauty of their colors and patterns are contagious, but also the smaller, somewhat more lively representatives have their fascination in aquaristics. Threadfish even build a relationship with their keeper. They know exactly who feeds them! In our Garnelio online store you can buy gourami wild forms and the coveted cultivated forms - ornamental fish with a long tradition in the aquarium hobby that will charm you.
