Live birthing toothcarps in nature

The live-bearing toothcarps or Poeciliidae are an incredibly diverse family of fish, which includes such beautiful aquarium fish as the colorful guppies and platies, the swordtails, mollies or even the sail carps.

Live-bearing toothcarps are mainly found in freshwater. They originate from the tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas, but many species are now found in warmer waters around the world. They are popular for mosquito larvae control.

These colorful ornamental fishes tend to be small-bodied or medium-sized, and the majority are enormously adaptable, hardy and eager to reproduce. Many species are rather surface oriented and also like to fetch approach food - this way of life can be easily recognized by their slightly to strongly overhanging mouth. The differentiation of the sexes is quite simple: In the males the ventral fin is transformed into the so-called gonopodium, the sexual organ.

All livebearers are very sociable group fish and absolutely need the company of at least 4-10 conspecifics.

Guppies and Endler Guppies

The genus Poecilia, well known in aquaristics, has produced in South America not only the well-known aquarium fishes Sailbearers and Mollies, but also the smaller, but no less beautiful Guppies and Endler Guppies. The name Gubbys is also often read, but unfortunately it is not spelled correctly. These great little ornamental fish live there in waters with medium to rather hard water at temperatures of 22 to 28 degrees. They are sometimes even found in the brackish water of river mouths. They can already be kept in small, well planted standard aquariums from 60 cm edge length and 54 liters volume.

Guppies and Endler Guppies are also known as million fish. They are extremely productive and reproduce extremely well. A predator in the aquarium can therefore not hurt if you keep females and males! If you want to stop the uncontrolled reproduction, you can buy only males in our store. In a pure male group Guppies live even longer, because they have less stress. If you want to breed specifically, you can of course also buy females!

Here at Garnelio in our online store we offer a very large selection of different color varieties and fin shapes of Guppies and Endlers for sale - Endler Japan Blue, Dumbo ear, red blond, Cobra blue, Snakeskin red, Tuxedo red, Blue Moscow, Koi Kohaku and how they are all called - and many, many more. With Guppies and Endlers, the choice of fin shapes, colors and patterns is almost unlimited!

Thanks to their small size Endler Guppies are counted among the Nanofishes and of course have an entry in our "The Nanofish Lexicon".

Mollies

For those who find the colorful Guppies and the colorful Platies or the swordtails with their many varieties too gaudy, they can also take a closer look at the somewhat more reserved, but therefore no less beautiful Mollies from the species Poecilia sphenops for their aquarium from 100 liters or 80 cm edge length. They are also viviparous tooth carps and reproduce accordingly willingly in the aquarium. Male mollies grow to 4-6 cm and females to 6-10 cm and are therefore quite impressive aquarium fish. Mollies are actually brackish water fish, which occur in the lower reaches of rivers up to quite salty estuaries in South America. Mollies kept in freshwater are very grateful for a salt addition of 1-2 g NaCl per liter of aquarium water. They definitely prefer hard water. The temperature in the aquarium may be 22-28 °C. Especially the perfect black Black Mollies are well known, but there are other very attractive color forms of Poecilia sphenops: the black and white Dalmatian Molly, the Silver Molly, the black Lyra Mollies with their special fin shape, as well as the silver Lyra Mollies, golden yellow Gold Mollies, Leopard Mollies, black Gold Dust Mollies with a great color gradient into golden yellow, and of course also the Leopard Balloon Mollies, which belong to the species Poecilia latipinna. Also with the Mollys you can mix the color forms, they are still perceived as conspecifics.

Platies and Parrot Platies

From South America and Central America come the platys or mirror platys and parrot platys, Xiphophorus maculatus and Xiphophorus variatus, with their bright variegated colors. Their home waters are characterized by rather hard water, in the aquarium the robust ornamental fish get along perfectly with medium to hard water. Sometimes they are also spelled plattys, but this spelling is unfortunately not correct. They grow somewhat larger than Guppies and Endler Guppies and therefore need an aquarium with an edge length of 60-80 cm. It can be planted well.

The many breeding forms of the Platys offer a true firework of colors for the observer. In the aquarium they are easy to breed. Here in our online store we offer many different color forms of the mirror platy for sale: Tricolor platies, coral platies, the platy "blue calico glow", the red wagtail platy, coral Berliner, blue platies, pineapple needle, rainbow, the black and white panda, bumblebee, Marygold glow, Hawaii, plain red, Germany platies, ... There are also great color forms in the variegated parrot pl aties: Hawaii and Hawaii Highfin, to name just two.

Swordtails

From South America come the swordtails, called Xiphophorus helleri. They are closely related to platies and parrot platies and can interbreed with them. They also come in many beautiful color varieties. The males have a greatly elongated fin ray at the bottom of the caudal fin, called the sword. The females do not have this sword, here the sex differentiation is again clearly easier than with the other live-bearing tooth carps. In their native waters the swordtails generally live in rather hard water, in the aquarium the robust, quite large ornamental fish get along wonderfully with medium-hard to very hard water. Due to their size, swordtails should not be kept in an aquarium with an edge length of less than 100 cm, which may be well planted.

The many breeding forms of the swordtail offer the observer a real firework of colors. Xiphophorus helleri is easy to breed in the aquarium. Here in the online store of Garnelio we offer different color forms of the swordtail for sale: Neon Swordtails, the Marygold color form, the black swordtail, the classic red variety, green swordtails, pineapple swordtails , Koi Sanke, ...

Other livebearing toothcarps

Besides guppies and platies, the swordtails, mollies belong to the livebearing toothcarps also, for example, the many colorful, quite large sail carps and of course thedwarf carps, which you will find in this section. The large-finned Sailcarps grow relatively long and therefore need an aquarium with an edge length of 120 cm or more, whereas the Dwarf Carps can be kept in 54 liters. Sailfish are actually brackish water fish that occur in the salty waters of estuaries in Mexico, more precisely, on the Yucatan Peninsula. Sailfish kept in freshwater are quite delicate, a salt addition of 2.5 g per liter of aquarium water helps them tremendously. In the right water they are as hardy as the other Poeciliidae. There are beautiful color forms of the sail carps: black, dalmatian, red, gold, ...

The 2-3 cm long dwarf car ps from the southeastern United States of America also tend to be found in hard water and brackish estuaries. They are the smallest fish species in North America and have of course made it into our "The Nanofish Encyclopedia".

Feeding livebearers

Livebearing toothcarps need a mixed diet. They eat algae, biofilms and other coatings in the aquarium, devotedly take care of live food of suitable size in the aquarium, but also very gladly take frozen food. Flake food or granulated food are also no problem and enrich the diet of the beautiful colorful ornamental fish, along with soft vegetables such as tomatoes or pumpkin chips. Our NatureHolic Guppyfeed is suitable for all live-bearing toothcarps. The special consistency, our well thought-out recipe and the fact that we use only the highest quality ingredients that support the health and vitality of the ornamental fish make it a perfect food for guppies, platies, mollies and co.
