Platies and parrot platies in nature

The family of viviparous toothcarps or Poeciliidae includes the platies (sometimes written "plattys", but that's not quite right - platies they are not, on the contrary) and parrot platies, but besides them also, among others, the smaller but colorful guppies and the swordtails closely related to the platies and parrot platies, which can even interbreed with them. Platies, or mirror carps, are common in Central America in more marshy pools and slow-moving large rivers with rather hard water. They are also known as Xiphophorus maculatus, while parrot platies or variable mirror carps are only found in Central American Mexico, namely on the Caribbean side. They are known as Xiphophorus variatus. This species also lives in hard water.

These viviparous toothcarps are found in their biotopes mainly in freshwater, but they also penetrate brackish estuaries.

These colorful ornamental fish grow to only about 4-6 inches in length and are very adaptable, hardy and also eager to reproduce. Platies and parrot platies stay mainly below the water surface. Their mouth is above and is well suited to eat approach food.

Breeding of Platies and Parrot Platies

Distinguishing the sexes of platies and parrot platies is simple: adult males have their ventral fin extended to form the sexual organ, called the gonopodium, and females grow larger than males and often have a pregnancy spot, a dark spot at the end of the abdomen toward the base of the tail.

Keeping in the aquarium

As livebearers, platies and parrot platies are sociable and compatible group fish that need the company of conspecifics. The color does not matter, so you can keep several colorful, different color forms together well, if you do not attach importance to purebred offspring.

In the aquarium you can keep the robust, brightly colored ornamental fish well with medium to hard water, possibly a salt addition of 1-2 g per liter of aquarium water can benefit them very much. They grow a little larger than the rather small Guppies and Endler Guppies and should therefore be placed in an aquarium with an edge length of 60-80 cm or more. The tank may be well planted.

The many colorful breeding forms of the Mirror Guppies and Variable Mirror Guppies can be put together to a real color firework for the observer. Here in the online store of Garnelio we offer many different color forms of the mirror carp and the parrot platy for sale: tricolor platys with exciting color gradients, the great patterned platy "blue calico glow", the classic red wagtail platy, the traditional black and red coral Berliner, rare blue platys, the interestingly colored form pineapple needle, Rainbow Platys with beautiful play of colors, but also the black and white Panda Platy, the black and yellow Bumblebee Platy, bright Marygold Glow, tricolor Hawaii Platys, but also plain red Mirror Platies as well as black and yellow and red Germany Platys - and more.
