Neocaridina species, the ideal shrimp for beginners

The dwarf shrimp from the genus Neocaridina are easy to keep, they are very suitable for beginners in shrimp keeping. Neocaridina dwarf shrimp tolerate water values from soft to very hard, and get along with tap water. Neocaridina shrimp are also suitable for community tanks with relatively peaceful fish such as danios. As omnivores they have no great demands on food.  The species Neocaridina davidi and Neocaridina palmata, which are relevant in the hobby of aquaristics, are characterized not only by their robustness but also by a high reproduction rate. If the young animals find sufficient hiding places, they will grow up even in the company of smaller fish. Click here to visit our Neocaridina Blog. Furthermore we recommend to feed them our food package which contains everything your animals need.

In the genus Neocaridina there are two species that are interesting for aquaristics: Neocaridina davidi and Neocaridina palmata. Previously Neocaridina davidi were known as Neocaridina heteropoda and even earlier as Neocaridina denticulata sinensis, Neocaridina palmata was known as Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis. The species have since undergone revision and are now classified under the above names.

Neocaridina have many different pattern and color forms. This is a fairly robust and prolific genus of dwarf shrimp. Neocaridina can cope with many different water values and are also suitable for community aquariums.

The wild form of Neocaridina davidi is rather inconspicuous transparent with a stripe or dot pattern. Occasionally there are also animals with the well-known flame pattern in brown or black, also colored variants exist and shrimps with a narrow to broad dorsal stripe. They are known as algae shr imp or backstroke shrimp.

The classic Neocaridina davidi color variety, the Red Fire dwarf shrimp, is usually more or less red and shows a flame pattern interrupted by transparent areas. Often the females of the Red Fire shrimp have a lighter dorsal stripe.

The Red Sakura has a dense color coverage without transparent areas as a breeding goal, optimal are here also completely red colored legs. A variety of the Red Sakura is the Red Rili. In the Rili pattern the animals have large contiguous transparent areas, in the Red Rili the head and tail fans are usually red.

The Blue Rili is not blue, as the name suggests, rather these are Red Rilis with blue inner body color.

From the Blue Rili the Blue Jelly was bred. Here the red cover colors are missing in the ideal case completely, so that one sees only the bluish body interior shimmering. The Blue Jelly is of a transparent ice blue.

The Chocolate Sakura is of a light to pale bitter brown. There is also a Rili expression here, but it is rarely seen.

The Bloody Mary is red, but shows a mostly darker, even more intense color than the Red Sakura and a clearly shortened rostrum (projection between the antennae). These animals were not bred out of the Red Fire, but out of the Chocolate Sakura.

The Black Sakura is opaque black, also ideally with solid colored legs, the Carbon Rili is the Rili variant of the Black Sakura. Blue Black Rili, also called Blue Carbon Rili, have an intense blue interior body color and black markings.

Blue Velvet, Blue Diamond and other dark blue variants are usually descended from the Blue Carbon Rili, which have had the black markings more or less completely bred away.

Yellow Fires are yellow. The opaque yellow variant is known as Yellow Sakura, the Rili expression as Yellow Rili. Animals with a bright, broad dorsal stripe are called Yellow Neon. Here even males with dorsal stripe can occur, a phenomenon not normally found in Neocaridina davidi.

Orange Fire is the name of the orange coloration - again there is the opaque colored Orange Sakura variant and the Orange Rili with transparent areas.

Relatively new in the color range is the Green Jade shrimp. This Neocaridina davidi is olive green to bright green. Since this is still a very young breeding, the offspring still scatters strongly and must be carefully sorted by color for further breeding.

The wild form of Neocaridina palmata is very variable, here are blue, red, brown, reddish brown, black, greenish, olive and also transparent animals with stripe pattern.

The breeding form White Pearl is also a Neocaridina palmata. It was selected from the wild form by a German breeder. The White Pearl is characterized by its whitish coloration and especially by white eggs, which look like small pearls, which the female attaches to her hind legs for brood care. High quality White Pearls have few white color pigments on the skin, others are more whitish transparent.

The Blue Pearl is the bluish sister of the White Pearl. It was also bred in Germany. Unfortunately there are not many Blue Pearls left. It is very light bluish transparent and has yellowish eggs.
