Armored knights with extra armor - land hermit crabs

Crayfish also look great in the terrarium! Land hermit crabs are fascinating animals which are fully adapted to life on land. They can be found in tropical and humid regions as well as at the sea and near the beach.

These beautiful crustaceans are omnivorous, they need fruits, vegetables and also animal food like frozen food or protein food. Mineral food is also good, it helps the land hermits to build a strong, stable and hard shell.

Land hermit crabs are great terrarium animals. They grow to 8-15 cm depending on the species. In the terrarium they need a water bowl, depending on the species with salt water or fresh water. Some land hermits also need both. The bowls should not be too deep, because land-dwelling hermit crabs can drown in water that is too deep.

Coenobita perlatus, Strawberry Herm it Crab, is particularly beautiful. With its red legs and claws and red carapace, the strawberry hermit crab really stands out. Also very beautiful is the short clawed land hermit crab Coenobita brevimanus from the Southwest Pacific. This land hermit is predominantly purple to lilac in color. Coenobita violascens is also slightly purple to brownish in color. The Komurasaki land hermit crab is a great climber and also likes to burrow, just like all other land hermits in the genus Coenobita. To molt, these decapods like to burrow. The furrowed land hermit crab Coenobita rugosus lives close to the beach in mangrove forests and of course on the beach itself. The widespread animals become very large, with up to 15 cm body length the Furrowed Land Hermit needs a terrarium with 80 cm length or more.

Land hermit crabs, scientifically called Coenobitidae, are social animals that not only prefer but need group housing. Land hermits kept singly will atrophy.

With each molt, the crab grows and then needs a larger shell to protect its soft abdomen.

Land hermit crabs are of the primitive reproductive type, females carry hundreds of tiny eggs under their abdomen and in nature release their larvae into the sea where they develop through Zoea and Megalopa stages into finished land hermits. After the final metamorphosis, the finished tiny land hermits migrate to land and look for a snail shell. Breeding in the hobby has already been successful.
