The very nicely patterned Alenquer King Tiger Loricariid (Hypancistrus sp.) L401 or Yellow Zebra Loricariid from Brazil comes from the state of Para. The Alenquer has a yellow-brown worm pattern that makes it look very interesting. The Alenquer King Tiger Loricariid grows to about 14 inches long, so it is a rather small catfish.
Quite calm, rather shy and well tolerated with other fish, the Alenquer King Tiger Loricariid feels most comfortable in an appropriately sized aquarium in a group of at least 3 conspecifics. These peaceful Hypancistrus sp. are well suited for keeping in a community tank, provided their fellow fish have similar water requirements. Also with shrimps the Alenquer King Tiger Loricarius gets along quite well. For a smaller group of 3-4 animals we recommend an aquarium from 100 cm.
The Alenquer King Tiger Loricarius likes a good structure in the aquarium and loves wooden roots. Alenquer King Tiger Loricariids like to hide in darker areas and accept caves that are open on one side well. Growth, biofilms and algae are readily eaten by the beautiful striped loricariid catfish, especially the fry sometimes nibble on tender plants. The Alenquer King Tiger Loricariid is considered an excellent algae eater!
The Alenquer King Tiger Catfish likes soft to medium hard water. High oxygen levels are important, as is the presence of humic substances and the lowest possible water pollution and clean water in the aquarium. You can use a diffuser, oxydator or bubble stone to push the oxygen level up sufficiently for your loricariid catfish. The aquarium temperature should be 26-30 °C for the L401, the pH value should be 6 to 7.5.
The sexes of the L 401 are relatively easy to distinguish. The spawning-ripe females have a clearly visible spawning attachment and appear clearly thicker, the males have a more clearly pronounced growth of odontodes on the hind body.
Breeding of L 401 has often been successful and is not considered particularly difficult. Lowering the conductance and pH simulates the rainy season when catfish breed in nature. A stronger current can also help stimulate spawning. This Hypancistrus sp. will even reproduce in a community aquarium if conditions are favorable.
In the youth the Alequer King Tiger Catfish eats almost exclusively algae and vegetable food, with increasing age Hypancistrus sp. L 401 develops more and more to an omnivore. Vegetables and algae are eaten with pleasure, the adult catfish also like to take frozen food. Special catfish sticks are of course always ok.
