Mauritius grass plant Lilaeopsis mauritiana is found in nature only on the island of Mauritius. It has been in the hobby since 1995, where it is mainly used as a foreground grass plant. With its distinctively narrow light green leaves, the Mauritius grass plant looks most like a lawn. The leaves are roundish in cross-section and hollow on the inside. Lilaeopsis mauritiana likes it a little warmer (20-30 °C). The leaves grow up to 12 cm high, which makes it a great foreground plant for large aquariums and a nice eye-catcher in the foreground to middle ground in smaller tanks. If there is a lot of light, the plant will stay much shorter.
Lilaeopsis mauritiana reproduces by runners and thus quickly forms dense stands. A proper pruning is well tolerated. It is propagated simply by cutting off the runners with the young plants, which can then be used elsewhere.
The Mauritius grass plant needs medium to strong light, CO2 fertilization is beneficial but not essential.
Lilaeopsis mauritiana is particularly effective when combined in the foreground to middle ground with plants with broader leaves. This creates beautiful, very natural looking contrasts.
Here you can buy the Mauritus grass plant in an InVitro cup, it comes from a sterile laboratory culture. This guarantees not only freedom from snails, but also the absence of algae, fungi, worms and other passengers that you do not want in the aquarium. Pesticides are also not used, and so the Mauritius grass plant from InVitro culture can be immediately placed in the aquarium without quarantine measures after rinsing the nutrient substrate on the roots.
It has proven useful to divide the Lilaeopsis mauritiana into pieces of about 2x2 cm. Plant them with a little distance to each other in the substrate, so they grow best. The gaps will soon close due to the runners that the grass plant sends out.
