from over 3,000 reviews "The dew worm or eel worm, also called common earthworm,(Lumbricus terrestris) is one of the most common and also largest earthworms in Europe. The large annelids can grow 9-30 cm long and are a great live food for larger omnivorous or carnivorous fish and invertebrates in the aquarium and lizards and amphibians in the terrarium. Dewworms are also a very good food for birds and for chickens.
Dewworms are low in fiber and not very high in fat, but they are very high in protein. Therefore, earthworms are good as a feed supplement, not so much as a complete feed. As part of a balanced diet they are an important source of protein for your terrarium animals, aquarium animals or birds.
Dewworms can be stored in the refrigerator for a longer period of time. To do this, place the worms in a larger container with a loose-fitting or air-permeable lid.
Breeding of dewworms is not very complicated. It works well to breed worms in a larger plastic box with a tight-fitting lid with holes or slits for better oxygenation. Ideally, for even better air supply, cut a larger hole in the center of the lid and close it with fly screen or gauze. Dewworms like their environment rather shady to dark. Dewworms multiply at temperatures around 20-25 °C. They lay a cocoon formed by the clithellum (the reddish belt) with their worm eggs in it in the substrate.
A good substrate for dewworms is untreated soil mixed with pieces of egg cartons and brown leaf litter. The substrate for your dew worm breeding should never get completely dry, so in the worm breeding box you will need to spray water daily to moisten the substrate.
Dew worms or eel worms arefed with decaying autumn leaves, green leaves, soft vegetable scraps, fruit scraps, oat flakes, spirulina tablets, ... You should remove uneaten fresh food from the worm box after some time to prevent mold and mites from spreading in your dew worm breeding.
Dewworms are a high protein live food. Their nutritional values on average are:
- Crude protein 11%
- Crude fat 1,5%
- Crude ash 1,5%
- Crude fiber 1%
Suitable for: medium to large fish, juvenile to adult crayfish, omnivorous and carnivorous crabs, large arm shrimp, newts, turtles, frogs and toads, snakes, salamanders and lizards. Also super for feeding chickens and other birds, optimal for raising young birds.
A little tip on the side: dew worms are excellent compost worms. A newly created compost pile can be excellently animated with a culture of Lumbricus terrestris! As fishing bait the dew worm is very well known and popular.
