from over 3,000 reviews "A very special live food are our giant mealworms, which reach with approx. 4-5 cm length almost the size of Zophobas. In order to reach this unusual size, the mealworms are made to pupate much later than normal using a special breeding method. In this way, the mealworms grow longer and thus reach a greater length. Their nutritional values correspond to those of normal mealworms:
- Crude protein: approx. 53%
- Crude fat: approx. 33
- Crude ash: approx. 3%
- Crude fiber: approx. 6%
Please note: Our giant mealworms come from a fishing bait breeding. For their breeding possibly also auxiliary substances can be used, which cause the mealworms to pupate later.
Mealworms are the larvae of the black beetle or flour beetle (Tenebrio molitor). This beetle is a native pest that feeds on flour and grain products. Flour beetles reach a length of about 10-18mm, their color is dull black.
You can store the giant mealworms well in a faunabox. Mealworms need enough space and should not be in several layers on top of each other. Egg cartons in the Faunabox can give the worms more space.
An important point in mealworm breeding is to avoid too much humidity! The box should have a lid with vents or be left open right away. If there is too much moisture, ammonia can develop. Mealworms from such an environment will not be eaten.
Fill your giant mealworms into a Faunabox using wheat bran as substrate. 250 g mealworms may get a good 250 ml of wheat bran - the Faunabox must of course be sufficiently large. You can also use a mixture of flour, sawdust and oat flakes.
Also add some dry bread or rolls and some fruit or vegetables as food for the mealworms, so that the worms get a good vitamin and nutrient content. The fresh food is changed daily so that there is no mold growth.
You can recognizefreshly skinned giant mealworms by their light color. These worms are easier to eat because their skin is not yet hard. By the way, if the giant mealworms pupate, you can also feed the soft white pupae!
