from over 3,000 reviews "Live food - Golden fly maggots - tin 50 ml
Golden fly maggots Lucilia caesar are a good live food for frogs and toads (and other amphibians) in terrariums and aquaterrariums, for reptiles, for crayfish and crabs and for breeding wild birds or pet birds. They are also known as pinky maggots.
You can breed golden fly larvae relatively well. When the fly maggots have pupated, put them into a plastic container of about 40 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm, which should be transparent. It is important that the container has a tight-fitting lid. Cut a hole in the lid and seal it all around with a nylon stocking. Then cut off the foot of the stocking and close the opening with a bag clip or clothespin. Through the lock formed in this way you can reach into the fly breeding container without the goldflies escaping.
The ideal temperature for breeding flies is 25 °C air temperature. The fly breeding container is equipped with a bird bath for water supply and with a feeding bowl. Feed the golden flies with a mix of milk porridge (pure or with fruit, from Alete, Humana, etc.), cod liver oil, honey and multivitamin juice. Make sure that the food is not sticky, so that the goldflies do not stick. As an egg-laying place, give the goldflies a small bowl, which you fill with moist wheat bran and some minced meat. This is where the goldflies like to lay their eggs, as well as in the food dish.
Put the contents of the egg-laying tray and the food tray into a 5-liter bucket lined with damp household towels, the maggot container. A 5-liter canister is also suitable. The opening is covered fly-tight with a piece of fly gauze. The maggots of the golden fly should not get warmer than 26°C. Feeding is done with dog food or cat food, minced meat is also possible. Attention, a maggot breeding on meat basis can smell very unpleasant, therefore look for a place in the open air for your fly breeding!
If you want to feed the maggots of the golden fly, they must be thoroughly washed in a fine sieve before feeding.
You feed the maggots of the golden fly daily. They pupate after 8-10 days. Then fill the goldfly maggot container with cold water. The pupated maggots float on the water surface, you can simply skim them off with a sieve.
For further breeding, put pupae back into the fly container with the adult goldflies. After about 5-8 days the young goldflies hatch.
Here you buy goldfly maggots, not adult goldflies.
