Live food - Mealworms vers. Sizes

Mealworms are the larvae of the black beetle or flour beetle (Tenebrio molitor). The flour beetle is native to our country - a pest that eats flour and grain products. The dull black beetles grow to be about 10-18mm long. Mealworms are  very rich in nutrients. Their nutritional values on average are:

• Crude protein: approx. 53%
• Crude fat: approx. 33
• Crude ash: approx. 3%
• Crude fiber: approx. 6%

To do this, place them in a Faunabox with slits in the lid - this way you avoid excess moisture, which would lead to ammonia formation and can make the worms unusable. In the Faunabox the mealworms should not lie in several layers on top of each other. You can avoid this by placing egg cartons in the Faunabox - this way the worms have more space.

Wheat bran is a good substrate for mealworms in the Faunabox. 250 g mealworms need 250 ml wheat bran. Alternatively, you can use a mix of flour, sawdust and oatmeal.

Feed the mealworms with some dry bread, toast or rolls. Add a little fruit or vegetable to enrich the mealworms with vitamins and minerals. You should change the fresh food daily to prevent mold growth in your mealworm culture.
Freshly skinned mealworms are still soft and therefore easier to eat. You can recognize them by their lighter color. When mealworms pupate, you can still feed the soft white pupae very well!

Suitable for: Birds, reptiles, amphibians, carnivorous and omnivorous crabs, carnivorous large fish like arowana, small mammals like mice or hamsters, chickens and many more

Please note: Mealworms are very nutritious and fatty and therefore should not be fed every day to reptiles, amphibians, crabs and shrimps, fish and small mammals.
