from over 3,000 reviews "Live food - Rose beetle larvae - 10 pieces
Here you can buy the larvae of the Congo rose beetle Pachnoda marginata peregrina, synonym: Pachnoda butana, as live food for lizards and crabs in the terrarium. The Congo rose beetle originates from tropical and subtropical areas in Africa. Its protein-rich larvae can reach a stately size of up to 40 mm and become almost as thick as a finger. Caution: With their powerful biting tools, rose chafer larvae can pinch quite a bit. Because they do not have a chitinous shell, the larvae are quite soft on the body and easy to eat. Rose beetle larvae are optimal for reptiles after hibernation and for females after egg laying.
Congo rose beetle larvae are best stored at room temperature.
The Congo rose beetle is fairly easy to breed and is very productive. Aside from that, the beetles themselves are also super fun to watch and pretty fun fellows to have in the terrarium. The diurnal rose beetles climb and fly and are perfect for beginners in keeping rose beetles. In nature, they live mostly on trees and shrubs, where they feed on fruits, petals and tree sap.
Rose beetles also like to climb in terrariums, so a well set up terrarium with thicker branches is most species appropriate for a breeding setup. It is best to place the branches on the bottom of the terrarium before filling the substrate, so that they cannot be undermined by the larvae later and fall over.
A small aquarium or a large fauna box with an edge length of 40 cm or more is ideal for Congo rose beetles. The larvae live in the soil and therefore need at least 10-20 cm high substrate. You should consider this when choosing your container - the height must fit. The lid should have a ventilation area, you can also simply cover the aquarium with fly gauze.
It is good to have a heat source for the rosebugs, which need 20-28 °C. You can place a 20W spotlight outside the breeding box and let it shine into the tank.
A permanently moist 1:1 mixture of forest soil and white rotten wood has proven to be a good substrate. The larvae can utilize the wood well. On top of the substrate you put a thicker layer of brown autumn leaves. This keeps the substrate moist longer, and the foliage is also an important component of the natural food for the larvae and adult beetles. Moistening the soil in the rose beetle breeding container with a watering can once a week has proven to work well. Spraying may not be sufficient. Please do not put the container under water.
You can feed your Congo rose beetles and the rose beetle larvae with ripe to overripe fruits or vegetables. Please make sure to replace the food in time so that mold does not form.
Congo rose beetles mate all year round, so you have permanent offspring for your terrarium animals.
