The loach catfish (Aspidoras spilotus) is a popular species within the armored catfish and belongs to the genus Aspidoras. The species originates from South America and reaches a final size of about 5 cm. Due to its small size, the loach armored catfish is well suited for smaller aquariums of 54 liters or more.
Like all Corydoras, the Loach Catfish is a group fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6. In nature, they live in schools and scour the substrate together for food. In the aquarium they are therefore very useful for keeping the substrate clean. The substrate should be fine or at least have a sandy area. In addition, the substrate can be decorated with plants, roots and stones to create shady places for the animals.
Loach armored catfish prefer soft water with a noticeable current. Water temperature should be between 20 and 27°C, pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and water hardness soft to medium. Regular water changes are important to maintain water quality and keep germ density low in the aquarium. Some breeders report that the loach lance catfish likes to spawn when water changes tend to be cooler.
In terms of food, loach lance catfish are not picky and will accept dry, granular, frozen and live foods. Selective supplemental feeding with food tablets or Tubifex may be appropriate, depending on the stocking density and feeding of the other aquarium inhabitants.
Propagation of armored catfish, including the loach armored catfish, is relatively easy. Eggs are attached to leaves, roots or the aquarium glass and are not guarded further. When the eggs are collected and transferred to a small aquarium or water tank, the young usually hatch after a few days and must be provided with special rearing food.
Overall, the Loach Tank Catfish is a peaceful group fish that is suitable for both beginners and advanced aquarists due to its small final size and uncomplicated husbandry.
Our food recommendation: The NatureHolic Main Feed is a professional staple food for all aquarium fish. We supply Hauptfeed in the form of soft granules, which, thanks to its grain size of half a millimeter, can be easily ingested by small to medium-sized fish. The soft consistency resembles the texture of insect larvae in nature and protects the fish mouth from micro-injuries.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
