The dwarf fan shrimp from Southeast Asia looks a bit like an amano shrimp at first cursory glance. Its base color is gray to brownish, and it has fine black markings on the sides of its body. A thin dorsal stripe is often visible as well. If you look more closely, you can see that - unlike the Amano - the scissor legs have been re-shaped into fans. The rostrum (the "nose") is also slightly bent downwards. Atyoida pilipes grows only to a maximum of 5.5 cm and is thus quite small for a fan shrimp. The females are somewhat chubbier than the males.
In nature, the dwarf fan shrimp lives in stream sections, from which it filters drifting food with the help of its fans. In the aquarium, the swimming lively mini fan shrimp therefore also need seats in a strong current, which is best realized with an additional current pump. Surfaces are also grazed. Unlike other fan shrimp, this is not a sign of a problem with Atoyida pilipes, but normal behavior.
As food is suitable special fan shrimp food, dust food, mortared dried nettle leaves, spinach powder, fine frozen food or also small grated flake food fanfeed
Other than keeping, breeding this fan shrimp is difficult. Atyoida pilipes is of the primitive reproductive type, the larvae need salt/brackish water to develop and go through several stages to become a finished fan shrimp. The breeding process is similar to that of the Amano shrimp.
As a compatible group animal, the mini fan shrimp likes to sit with conspecifics in the current. Due to their smaller body size, a 60 cm aquarium is sufficient for a small group of 5 animals. They can also be socialized with snails, shrimps and peaceful small fish without any problems. Crayfish and crabs like to attack the defenseless mini fan shrimp and even injure or kill them, so we do not recommend socializing with them.
Our food recommendation: The biologically valuable complete feed NatureHolic Fan Feed Fan Shrimp Food is a finely ground dust food especially for fan shrimp. It contains krill, spirulina, moringa and Dunaliella salina and a special blend of immediately bioavailable organic mineral compounds.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
