from over 3,000 reviews "Marine water fleas of the species Moina salina originate from salt lakes in Europe. Moina reproduce en masse under good conditions, which makes them a very good live food for all kinds of fish. Even though this is a saltwater species, the salt content inside the body is no higher than that of freshwater water fleas.
However, you should rinse the saltwater fleas well before feeding them. The origin from salt water guarantees that you cannot introduce any parasites with this live food, which would survive in fresh water. Moina also die off quite quickly in the aquarium and are then also utilized by dwarf shrimp, dwarf crabs and snails.
The high fiber content of Moina salina is due to the quite voluminous chitinous carapace - very healthy for the intestinal function of fish and invertebrates, and especially for crustaceans such as shrimps, dwarf crabs, crabs and large crayfish an important supplement for building up their own crustacean shell. The nutrient content of Moina salina is not too high, so it is almost impossible to feed aquarium animals with sea fleas fat. They are not good as a complete food, but as a healthy supplement, water fleas are perfect! Besides fiber, some protein and very little fats, they also contain provitamin A and vitamin B2.
If the sea fleas are intended to be fed soon, you can leave them in the bags and simply store them in the refrigerator. If you want to use them for breeding, you can of course decant them.
For a breeding batch you need a basin of approx. 20 l with salt water, which should have the same density as the water in the bag. Please check with hydrometer! Table salt and sea salt for human consumption are not suitable for preparation, they contain trickling agent, which the sea water fleas do not tolerate well. Sea salt from the pet store is better. Feed with spirulina powder, nannochloropsis, dry yeast and so on. If you want to place the tank outdoors, you should make sure that it is not placed directly in the sun.
