Orange Dwarf Crayfish, Orange Dwarf Crayfish - CPO - Cambarellus patzcuarensis "orange"
A classic in the aquarium is the pretty orange CPO, probably the best known dwarf crab. Its pretty, sometimes quite intense orange contrasts beautifully with the green of the plants in planted aquariums. Since the orange dwarf crab does not go to plants, it can be kept very well in planted aquariums and well structured aquascapes with many hiding places. Partly the animals are territorial and also somewhat aggressive, sufficient retreat possibilities and also optical separations should be present in the aquarium thus definitely. The breeding is not particularly difficult and succeeds also beginners. Many hiding places are important, especially for the young crayfish. - Garnelio
Description

The orange dwarf crayfish, also called CPO (Cambarellus patzcuarensis "orange") , is an aquarium-bred color form of Cambarellus patzcuarensis found in the Mexican state of Michoacán. In habitat it is grayish brown to dark brown in color. It is found exclusively in the Lágo de Patzcuaro and adjacent streams and rivers. The temperature in the lake is between 15 and 25 °C, depending on the season, and the pH is quite high, between 7 and 9. Cambarullus patzcuarensis tends to inhabit the cool and muddy bottom of the water in its habitat, but it can also be found in the plant stands on the shore. Dutchman Juan Carlos Merino was the first to select and selectively breed the orange variety of these pretty dwarf crayfish. There is a marbled and a light and dark orange striped form.

Now and then it can happen that young Procambarus clarkii "orange" are confused with CPOs. A sure distinguishing feature are the eyes - while these are always completely black in Procambarus clarkii, they are bicolor in the CPO, dark gray or medium brown with a black dot in the middle.

The pretty little Cambarellus patzcuarensis "orange" has a life expectancy of about 18 to 24 months. CPOs become sexually mature after about three to four months. The females reach up to 40-50 mm body length, the males remain somewhat smaller. They can be reliably distinguished from females by their V-shaped mating styli under the body at the base of the abdomen.

The orange dwarf crayfish should be kept in an aquarium with a volume of at least 50 liters. At a pH of about 7 - 9 and a water hardness of 12 to 18 dGH, 2 adult animals with offspring can be kept at the given aquarium size. The aquarium should be furnished varied and very well structured, with plants (which by the way are neither nibbled nor dug up or pinched off by the CPOs) and plenty of hiding places. These hiding places can consist of stone structures, clay tubes, moss-covered bricks or dense root systems. A dark bottom with foliage adds a feel-good atmosphere for the Orange Dwarf Crab. In the hiding places the dwarf crayfish find protection especially after molting. A single attitude is unproblematic and corresponds to the habits of the animals in nature.

The orange dwarf crayfish is easy to breed. Females carry up to 40 dark gray eggs under their abdomen for about four to six weeks, which they devotedly groom and care for. Unfertilized eggs are orange. They are usually discarded very quickly to protect the fertilized eggs from fungus. If you have pregnant females in the aquarium, it is recommended to place two or three alder cones in the water to further prevent fungal growth in the eggs.
After about four to six weeks, 3 mm small crayfish hatch, remain under the mother's belly for a few days and then start an independent life in the aquarium.

In the beginning the baby crayfish molt practically every day - they are correspondingly vulnerable during this time. They need a lot of hiding places, also because they are strongly cannibalistic among themselves. Optimal here are the sintered glass rolls of Sera Siporax, but also a thick layer of brown autumn leaves does a good job.

Juveniles as well as adults should be fed protein-rich food such as Artemia or frozen food three to four times a week. The brown autumn leaves already mentioned several times are a very good, natural permanent food. But also special crayfish food is eaten just as gladly as granulate and flake food and also vegetable food.

It is possible to keep the Orange Dwarf Crayfish together with small, non bottom-dwelling or bottom-sleeping fish. However, you should make sure that the fish or other aquarium inhabitants do not chase the young crayfish. It is possible to keep them together with shrimp species that are suitable in terms of their requirements and reproduce well, even if one or the other shrimp may be eaten. Snails are eaten very gladly. Basically the keeping in species corners is recommended, because this way the Orange Dwarf Crayfish do not have to hide from possible enemies and will be more often on the move in the aquarium during the day.

The Cambarellus patzcuarensis "orange" originates from Central America and is thus a potential carrier of the crayfish plague, a tubular fungus that is deadly to all crayfish except those from North and Central America. Neither CPOs should be allowed to enter the wild, nor should water or decorative items and plants from their aquarium come into contact with European or Australian-New Zealand or Asian crayfish.

Our food recommendation: Freshwater crayfish have a very varied diet in the wild. The Natureholic Crayfish Feed Sticks contain in a biologically balanced form only those ingredients that these crayfish in this or similar form to their natural food spectrum. This naturally supports and promotes moulting, growth and reproduction. Due to their protein content they are ideally suited for omnivorous crayfish of the genera Procambarus, Cambarus, Cambarellus, Astacus and the Cherax crayfish from Australia, which are basically omnivores that like to eat animal as well as vegetable food. The crayfish of the genus Cherax from Papua also like to eat a portion of animal food when they are young, but later they switch mainly to plant food.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
